In honor of the new upcoming live-action Aladdin movie, by Disney. I’m dedicating the week for recipes that are inspired by the movie. Have a picnic on your magic carpet.
Woohoo!! It’s just a few more days until the new live action Aladdin comes to the big screens! I am so excited to see it. Are you?
A wonderful group of Disney Bloggers/Vlogers/Instagrammers and I have teamed up to have a great giveaway on IG when it is released. Stay tuned for that!
We all created wonderful recipes that are themed around the movie. Recipes that Jasmine and Aladdin would enjoy. Some are based on snacks featured in the Disney Parks and others are Mediterranean and Middle Eastern based recipes.
I have created 5 fantastic recipes that you would serve if you were hosting an “Arabian Nights’ themed party. Invite some friends over and watch the animated Disney classic. Or enjoy dinner at home before going out to the movies with your friends and family.
I am kicking this week off with Authentic Homemade Tzatziki Sauce.
Now, you might be thinking “Umm, why is she sharing a Greek recipe when they were in Agrabah.” And then I would tell you that Agrabah isn’t a real place and it’s hard to actually pin point the location of where it would be. The Aladdin story has roots in China actually, but over thousands of years of story telling moved it further West- towards the Middle East. Supposedly Agrabah is located along the River Jordan, which runs along the border between Jordan, the Palestinian West Bank, Israel and southwestern Syria. Since, there are similarities with some Middle Eastern foods and Mediterranean foods, so I’m focusing on foods that people are familiar with in that region.
So, if you haven’t had the opportunity to enjoy tzatziki sauce before, then you are missing out! It is a yogurt and cucumber sauce that is seasoned with lemon juice, garlic, dill, and olive oil. It comes together very quickly and easily. Tzatziki is typically enjoyed as a dip in mezza platter (similar to the antipasto/cheese platter) or as a sauce with you entree.
Anyway, I love Tzatziki!!! It has a really great, refreshing flavor. The yogurt helps cool and mellow out spices, while the cucumber brightens the flavors. It just makes everything pop!
Truth be told, I don’t like dill. I repeat, I do not like dill. Don’t you dare put that anywhere near my fish. I will slap you silly with my filet. But I will eat it in tzatziki. I block out my hatred when I am shoveling that delightful cucumber and yogurt sauce into my mouth.
I always liked tzatziki, but I really fell in love with it in Greece while on a college trip. We filled ourselves on architectural preservation lessons and the most incredible meals ever. We had the moves wonderful conversations while at dinner over great food and wine. Everyone needs to go to Greece at some point.
I really enjoy making tzatziki sauce because it’s a really forgiving recipe. You can use my recipe as a starting off point and make adjustments to make it your own. If you prefer it to be more garlicky, then add more garlic. More lemon? Then do it! Give it a try and figure out what you like.
Make a big batch of this Authentic Homemade Tzatziki Sauce! You’re going to love it!

How do you say Tzatziki?
Please do not butcher tzatziki like how people butcher gyro (Don’t get me started!). You do not say “Ta-zeek-y”.
So, please try to pronounce it correctly by pronouncing it like “tsah-see-key”. The “tsah” sounds like “zaa” when saying Pizza, with a bit more ‘t’ at the front end of it.
Where is Tzatziki from?
Tzatziki has Mediterranean roots with origins in Turkey and Greece. Both countries serve very similar style yogurt based sauces. Greek Tzatziki has goat milk yogurt, cucumber, olive oil, garlic, lemon, and dill. While Turkish Cacik uses cow’s milk yogurt and has sumac in it too.
Serving Tzatziki Sauce:

When incorporating it in dishes, it’s a staples in Greek gyros and wonderful with roasted chicken or lamb.
