Welcome to the Surprise Virtual Baby Shower for Lauren of Sew You Think You Can Cook!!!!!
…
When the craving for pumpkin spice and chocolate takes hold, these Pumpkin Spice Chocolate Chip Pudding Cookies are the perfect treat for you.
It’s Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day. I hope everyone who has it off gets to enjoy their long weekend.
Unfortunately, Price and I don’t get it off, but Autumn’s daycare is closed so Price is taking it off. (I’ll take off Veteran’s Day next month when daycare is closed then).
…
Bang Bang into the room!!!
Bang Bang Shrimp all for you!!!
Okay, I’ll stop now…
But honestly I had that dang song stuck in my head last week while I was checking out the newly opened Bonefish Grill in Waltham, a suburb of Boston. I’m such a dork!
It was just such a great night so I was in a fun, silly mood. That’s what happens when you are enjoying fantastic food and drinks. (Plus, a solo night our it hard to juggle at times so this felt extra special that we worked it out on a night when Price had a Conservation Committee meeting with the city.)
Ultimately, you really can’t go wrong having a delicious dinner in brand spankin’ new restaurant. The best yet is that the Waltham location features their brand new design concept. It’s stunningly beautiful with rich woods, cool lights, and fun decorative features.
Prominently featured at the entry of the restaurant is their elegant wood backed bar. And opposite that is a feature wall that divides the bar area from the dining area that serves as wine bottle storage and display. Flanking the central wine storage section are fun lighting features that are reminiscent to the mangroves in their previous design style.
And the best yet is that the bar creates fantastic cocktails that can kick off and end your meals. I highly suggest the espresso martini to end your meal, like how we rounded out our dinner. (more on that later!)
Our group had the pleasure of sitting in one of their private function rooms that can accommodate a variety of seating arrangements to seat 12 people at a large table all the way up to having 80 people at a party.
It was a great space with a Westerly view that is fantastic for sunset watching. Just ignore the Costco in the foreground. Luckily from my seat I couldn’t see it, only the vibrant pinks and purples that streaked the sky.
Dinner started with Bang Bang Shrimp and Lobster Flatbread served as passed hors d’oeuvres. These were accompanied with a glass of sparkling wine. The perfect way to kick off our evening. Or you could visit yourself to share some apps with some friends while sitting at the bar enjoying a glass of wine.
Bang Bang Shrimp is their most popular dish. It outsells everything else. It wasn’t one of the menu staples when they first started but over time it was created and people became hooked. The numbers magically averages to 3 orders per table. That’s insane, but I can totally understand.
The addicted shrimp is coated with a seasoned breading mixture, and then are deep fried, before being served to you they are tossed in a creamy, spicy sauce. The sauce is killer. It’s like a spicy mayo that is served in sushi, but that isn’t even the best way to describe it as it’s way more than that. But the heat of the sauce grabs your attention and the crunch of the breading has you grabbing one after another after another!!
The Lobster Flatbread is another one of their Signature Starters.
It’s a wood-grilled flatbread that is topped off with pieces of cold water lobster, mozzarella, and red peppers. That is then drizzled with a with lobster-infused sour cream and a generous sprinkling of chopped green onions is tossed on top. Lobster on lobster goodness. It’s not overpowering but well-balanced.
Next we enjoyed their fish taco. Their Blackened Baja Fish Tacos is a hearty dish composed of three fish tacos and a side of greens. The filets of blackened fish are nestled in warm tortillas and then finished with shredded fresh romaine and mango salsa. Drizzles of  lime crema + fresh herb pesto finish the dish.
I felt my taco had a teeny bit too much herb pesto so it was a bit drippy and messy, but the flavors from the salsa were great, so it was an acceptable ‘issue’. The blackened fish had so much flavor, a spicy, smokey flavor, which went well with sweetness of the mango salsa.
The thing that really impressed me with Bonefish Grill was their history and their approach to dinning. They really try to make the night out feel like a night out, and not like you are dining at a chain, it just so happens that they have over 200 locations. Even then, the organization has a limit of how many restaurants they will open in a year allowing for attention to really be paid to each location, making it perfect for that community.
While we enjoyed our different courses we enjoyed 2 different wines that were paired with them. We first started with Masi Masianco, a Pinot Grigio and Verduzzo from Italy, then went to Conundrum, a red blend from California, as the dishes got heartier with spices and sauces.
The next small plate was a mini version of their Cilantro Lime Shrimp Salad (full sized featured above). The mix of greens with roasted corn, black beans, grape tomatoes, red onion, and feta cheese goes really well with the cilantro lime vinaigrette that lightly dresses the salad. The whole thing is topped off with 5 grilled shrimp.
The salad was great but the real show stopper is how it’s platted, brought to your table, and then presented. They put a clear open bottom cylinder in the bowl, layer all of the salad ingredients into it, and, of course, topping off with the fanned out shrimp. This is then brought to your table and when it’s presented to you the server removes the cylinder and your salad perfectly spills out into the bowl. Loved watching that presentation.
The Surf and Turf was the main for the evening.
While some people might overlook poultry, pork, and beef options, but they really need to consider them as great options for dinner as Bonefish Grill does such an amazing job wood-grilling their fish that they put that very same effort and skill set into their other meat options.
The Surf and Turf plate came with Ahi Tuna served with their Pan-Asian Sauce, Chilean Sea Bass with Mango Salsa and Filet Mignon. Each were utterly amazing in their own right, but my hands down favorite was the Ahi Tuni. The doneness of the tuna was spot on with a muted violet center and charred grill marks on the sides. There are several sauce options but I think that Pan-Asian Sauce was paired perfectly with it. The thing that I loved most was the buttery texture of the fish, it flaked apart so I didn’t even need a knife and it was buttery and tender. A real winner and something that I would order again.
The dinner ended with a Pumpkin Creme Brule. It was perfectly fall themed. It was a great way to celebrate the season with the rich pumpkin and spices mixed into the creme brule.
And they use freshly whipped whip cream. That is one of those minor things I judge a restaurant on. I just appreciate the extra effort they put into it than using a canister system. It’s inconsequential, but I always take note of it.
One of the diners has an allergy to cinnamon so they substituted her Creme Brule with their plain one, which is a menu staple. As well, there were 2 other guests with different allergies and the staff easily accommodated for their meals. There is an area of the kitchen and grill that is reserved for preparing and cooking for people, whatever their dietary needs may be.
The Creme Brule was incredible, but the real star of the show was the Espresso Martini.
An espresso is brewed for each martini order so it is really fresh. So fresh that I didn’t experience any bitter old coffee flavor that I sometimes get when I order an espresso martini. They also infuse their own vanilla vodka. It all was just wonderful and the best way to end the meal. A sip of the cocktail and then a bite of the creme brule, repeat.
It was a wonderful night out allowing me to meet new people, check out a new restaurant, and have a wonderful meal.
I know I’ll be back for the Bang Bang Shrimp!!! Especially on a Wednesday night when you can get the appetizer for just $6. yyyyyeeeeeeeessssssss!!!!

Happy Hump Day! I’ve made you waffles! (big surprise there…)
As I’ve mentioned before I just started taking spin classes. I absolutely love them.
I find them so invigorating. One of my coworkers introduced me to B\Spoke, a Boston based studio, and I have fallen in love with the studio and instructors there. I love how everyone has their own style of instruction and mix of music. It makes the classes so much fun. I look forward to the classes, enjoy being in the moment in the class, and feeling like I crushed it afterwards. Plus, checking my stats after class is fun.
…
Happy Monday!!
I’m not ready to embrace the work week, but I’m trying to talk myself into it! Like if I repeat it over and over again it will be true. I gotta Bettlejuice it. “Happy Monday! Happy Monday! Happy Monday!!!” And magically it will be a Happy Monday!! HA!
We just had a great weekend so I don’t want to go back to the normal routine. Oh boo!
It was rainy on Saturday so I took Autumn to a local in-door trampoline park. Unless she is watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, she is on the go, preferably outside. And I couldn’t just park her in front of that all day, so we tried out Skyzone for her. Price and I had loved it when we had done it so I was hoping she would as well.
There was a small toddler area that was perfect and a handful of other kids there. She liked hoping around with the balls and noodles but most of all she liked the bigger kids jumping and making her bounce and fall and bounce and fall over again since she is so small. She was cracking up for that hour.
And then on Sunday we met up with a friend of mine, his wife, and baby. Chris and I worked together a few years ago on a project and have stayed in touch going out to dinners with another guy from the team, so it was great meeting his wife and daughter. I wanted to steal Cora. And I don’t think Autumn would have minded as she kept kissing her. We met at the aquarium, where we have a membership, and then we went out for brunch. Autumn was so worn out by all the running around and action. Perfect day!
Anyway, I haven’t made many pies this year and I wish I had. I missed it from my Year of Pies last year. I was missing it so I dove into the long list of pies that I wanted to make last year but hadn’t gotten around to it. Better late than never.
Pears are just a great fall and winter fruit when you are craving something other than an apple. I have my favorites like bartlett and anjou, but the top pear is the comise.
I gave Price the first slice and he quickly dug in. He explained that he liked the combination of sweetness from the pears and the bite from the ginger. He did suggest that some vanilla ice cream would be a nice compliment to the ginger. And so he bought ice cream the next day for his next visit with the pie!
I hope you welcome the transition of summer to fall with this pie. Enjoy!

I’ve been ferociously reading books lately. It’s like I just rediscovered how great reading is and I need to make up for a slow spring. It’s great. I love it.
The Ghost Network: A Novel by Catie DiSabato
I got this from a recommendation based upon the books I’ve recently been reading. I think the topic is really interesting as it deals with the disappearance of a popstar (think Lady Gaga), but I am not loving the style of writing, but I’m hooked at the same time. Kinda when you love to hate something, but do like it. I find it a bit slow but I find it so attention getting.
I’m looking forward to getting to the end, but to just getting to the end, but to see where the story takes me as there so so many pieces to it.
Icy Sparks by Gwyn Hyman Rubio
I took this book from the house in Maine during our last visit in July. I’ve seen it for years in the house and have flipped through it but I finally asked Elaine if I could borrow it.
I’ve slowly been reading this book as it’s not the lightest book to read, but it’s an interesting story (so far) about a young girl with tourettes in the 1950’s in the rural Kentucky. She struggles with relating to her peers and teachers in school, and then her onset of tourettes increases her struggles as she doesn’t understand what is happening to her and her impulses get her in trouble.
I am looking forward to where this book takes Icy.
Easily Amused by Karen McQuestion
I was going through Amazon’s Kindle Store and found this book in their deals section. I’ve gotten some great books during their flash sales, so I figured I’d try it again with this pick. It had a good rating so I figured I’d give it a spin.
Like some of my other summer reads, I thought that it was light and fun.
The Life List: A Novel by Lori Nelson Spielman
This book was suggested to me from my friend Dawn. I’m glad she suggested it as it was a fun summer read.
I breezed through this book because it was a light read and I enjoyed it so much. I liked how the main character, Brett, rediscovers herself through her old life list. Her journey at finding happiness while abandoning her materialistic life behind her seems sincere and heartfelt. Her struggles are ones that we can relate to in our own ways.
There were points when things seemed a bit vague, like the value of the inheritance, or just came together too well, like Mr. Trenchcoat, but overall it was a book that I enjoyed and would suggest.
It made me want to think back to my old life lists and try to remember what I wrote down to see if I was on the path I imagined when I was a young teenager. I think that while some of my life list goals have changed since then I am still on the right path.
Big Little Lies by Laine Moriarty
I bought this the very afternoon after I finished Moriarty’s The Husband’s Secret. I enjoyed it so much that I had to get another one of her’s ASAP.
The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty
It’s really amazing what we secrets we keep.
From the little secrets to the big ones. They all impact us in various ways from how to react to others to how we view ourselves. I continued to think about that, and what if’s, while reaching this book. I tried to put myself in the shoes of main characters and imagine what I would do if I was them. It kept me on my toes while I was trying to figure out how the story would reach it’s apex.
The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
I didn’t love the beginning of it, but once I got about 20-30 pages in I was hooked. HOOKED. I loved reading it. It was so good. I wanted to slap the main character so many times but I still felt invested in her and the story.
I didn’t see the end going the way it did and I loved it for that.
The Boston Girl: A Novel by Anita Diamant
This book is exactly why I love scrapbooking. And blogging!
It was such a wonderful read about a woman recanting her life to her granddaughter. I loved the storytelling aspect of it. It was told in a charming way that made it seem like that grandmother was talking right to you, as well. I found that it was a good reminder that our parents and grandparents lived these amazing lives before us so we really should shit down to take the time to talk to them.
It was set in and around Boston, which I just loved too. As I’ve lived here for the past 12 years, I enjoyed reading about the North End, Brookline, Roxbury, and, the further out, Rockport. I did a lot of googling of places and restaurants after reading about them to pull up old pictures and maps. So fun.

The wedding was exactly what we were looking for with a laid back dinner and lots of dancing.  We worked hard to have the night relaxed and fun and guests, and I think we achieved it.
These last photos of our wedding highlight the fun that we had during the speeches and dancing. Enjoy!
While people were finishing up their dinners we got up to say thanks to our family and friends for coming to celebrate this new chapter in our lives together.
And then we welcomed up my sister to give her Matron of Honor Speech.
I am not a fan of speeches or particularly being the center of attention in instances like that. They really make me anxious so Price and I agreed that my sister and his brother would be the only ones giving speeches. The parents were warned of consequences (me full body tackling them), repeatedly.
She wrote a lovely speech about having a fun and loving successful relationship and marriage. She has been married for over 14 years so she gave Price some very important advice that works for them… the wife it always right! ha!
I have reread her speech several times since then the wedding since she gave us her speech. I love it. I totally need to get it framed.
Cheers-ing with the wedding ‘theme’ matching personalized Mason Jar glasses she gifted to us. Love it!
And then it was Price’s brother’s turn to give his Best Man Speech.
Chase basically roasted all the Taggarts.
While everyone was recovering from Chase’s hilarious speech, we took a moment to cut our cake and give each other a bite.
Our venue, Crissey Farm, is attached to the Great Barrington Brewery, which is well known for their Chocolate Stout Cake. The chef who runs the Brewery kichenalso runs the Crissey Farm catering kitchen, so we worked with her to modify the signature recipe a bit to get the cake we were dreaming of. The look and taste were just perfect!
We are moving before our 1 year anniversary and it will just be too tricky to transport the frozen top tier of the cake, so we have decided to eat it the night before we move. I suggested at the 6 month anniversary, but Price suggested the night before the move as a great send off to one chapter in our life and to welcome a new one. So sweet, I just wanted to eat the cake again ASAP! HA!
To kick off the night of dancing, my dad and I then did our Father Daughter Dance.
I had selected the song “That’s My Daughter in The Water” by Loudon Wainwright. I first heard it at the end of Knocked Up and I loved it ever since. It’s just such a sweet song.
And then the dancing!!!!!!!
My addable niece Cara cut a rug the whole night. She partied hard dancing around all the cousins and adults.
Besides our wedding cake, we served small bite served desserts so people could sample a variety of things depending on their preferences. Also, you could grab something and run right to the dance floor!
While these photos are bright from the photographer’s flashes, the room was dark as we turned off the main hall lights and just had some accent lights on low. Just a FYI…
One of my favorite photos of the night. Love Megan and Sarah!
Throughout the night we had different playlists to match the music with the mood, so for the dance portion of the wedding we amped things up with our “DANCE EXPLOSION” playlist to get everyone dancing.
We have out glow in the dark necklaces and bracelets.
They were a big hit with everyone, especially the kids. They were a fun accessory to dance around with.
The Gensler Crew!!!!
We also gave out flip flops for anyone who wanted to use them. Just kick off your shoes, slap on some flip flops, and get comfortable to dance!
Our last dance song was “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond.
It’s such a classic feel good song. It felt so right in us picking it as it’s practically the unofficial song of Boston, where we met.
After the wedding a handful of us went to next door to Great Barrington Brewery to play some pool and dance around to music from the jute box. We closed out the bar too!

It’s Fall!!!
It is starting to feel like Fall and I love it.
Yes, I love Summer but I really do love Fall. The crisp smelling air in the mornings start the day off on the right note. I love the smells of fall from the apples to the fallen leaves to the pumpkin pie. Shoot, even pumpkin spice lattes smell amazing.
…
Autumn is growing at record speed. Okay, she is not, she is in fact she is still teeny tiny. But I can’t believe she is almost 2!! Sobs!!
I’ve loved every age so far, but right now this is so super cool as she is so active. We are starting to be able to participate in things together more as she can take instruction well and give it well too.
My new favorite activity together is baking!!!
Everyone has geared up for back to school activities, including fall baking, recently, but since my wee one is still so young, our focus has just been on the yummy fall baking.
While I love to bake from scratch, I have found that using a mix has really simplified things for us so that we can quickly and easily get started right after I pick her up from daycare.
I get home about 30-40 minutes before I pick Autumn up from daycare so I prep for our new baking adventures by taking out the Krusteaz mix, butter, and preheating the oven, grabbing the dog for a walk, dropping him off at home, and then I head over to get Autumn. On our walk home I tell her what we are making that night. She gets excited about using the mixer and using her hands to ‘play’ with the dough.
Last week we made yummy cookies using Krusteaz’s Brown Sugar Oatmeal Cookie Mix to make cookies. She helped with the mixer and by (sorta) rolling out the cookies.
And last night we made a toddler friendly version of Krusteaz’s Crispy Gold Star Day Cookies with their Meyer Lemon Cookie Mix. So good! And the perfect cookies to make with a toddler or young kids as they can use the cookie cutters to cut out the cookies and then decorate them with the sprinkles that came with the mix.
I started out by mixing the dough while Autumn was busy eating her dinner of lasagna, mango, and yogurt. Once she was done we were all ready to go!
I set her on the counter to help me cut out the cookies. It was the first time she used cookie cutters! She would grunt a bit as she push it down and then say ‘ah!’ when she was done, while she waited for me to pick it up to do it again and again.
We received the most adorable red aprons from Krusteaz, which would have been great to wear, but a certain toddler didn’t want to wear it. Something, something, screaming about her Minnie shirt. I, of course, wanted to protect the precious Minnie shirt, but she didn’t want it covered. #toddlerlyfe
We would then pat and roll out the dough again and again as we made more cookies. She certainly loved rolling out the dough.
Then I baked them. ‘Oven HOT mommy HOT!!!!” At least she gets that.
And how important it is to help with clean up!
We then decorated them the next morning, as the cookies need to cool before putting the glaze them and she goes to bed so early (6.30) so we just couldn’t fit it all in the night.
She did pretty well putting the glaze on them, but I think getting the sprinkles on the cookies was her favorite part!
We then brought them to daycare to share with her friends.
I hope you’ll bake up these! Be sure to grab a kid or two to for some fun help with the baking. You’ll love it, and so will they!
Makes 12-24 cookies, depending on cookie cutter size

Ugh, I’m so wiped out from the weekend, and I feel like I didn’t even do much. I just am so wiped out!! I felt asleep so early every night. It was so nice though.
Maybe it’s the change in season. Maybe it’s the crazy super moon! Maybe it’s just because I normally don’t properly sleep. hmm…
