Crab Eggs Benedict: Millbrook Company- Sedgwick, ME

September 26, 2015

Eggs Benedict is my favorite brunch dish. I love to try it everywhere we go from greasy spoons to top rated restaurants. I love the classic version, but I also love trying other fun variations. I share my experiences and personal ratings in my Eggs Benedict Reviews in my Dining Out Section. Check them all out!

While we were visiting Price’s mom, Elaine, in Maine earlier this summer, we were on a mission to get a new grill for her house there. Since her house is on a itty bitty island it’s a decent drive into the closest town containing big box stores, like 45 minutes.

So we needed some strength to make such a journey (ha!), so we stopped for breakfast on the way at Millbrook Company in Segwick, Maine.

Crab Eggs Benedict_Millbrook Company_03

Of course, as soon as I saw an Eggs Benedict on the Specials Board, I was immediately interested. Not just you’re typical Eggs Benedict, but a Crab Benedict, and for just $12.95. It sounded like a delicious deal!

In the unassuming building on the side of Rt 15, sits Millbook Company. A breakfast and lunch place opened Wednesday- Sunday from 7.30am to 2.00pm. They have the basics, and they serve them well. When you serve a limited menu, you better do it right, and it seems like they really do with the nice crowds in there and the food we all enjoyed, from the standard breakfast favorites to the delicious specials.

Millbrook Company has a great bakery that creates fantastic breads, cookies, bars, sticky buns, and much, much more. They serve there delicious baked goods at the restaurant, as well as sell them at area farmer’s markets.

While I didn’t get a breakfast that had a side of toast I did get a bite from Elaine just so I could try their house made jam. I love that they pay so close attention to their products that they make their own breads and jams.

We ordered the Blueberry Buckle for Autumn, figuring it is similar to a muffin, which she enjoys. She did thoroughly enjoyed it, as did we, when we snagged bites ourselves. It was moist, rich, and packed with blueberries. I loved the crumb on top too.

Crab Eggs Benedict_Millbrook Company_10

I’ve had plenty of Crab Cake Eggs Benedicts before, which are always enjoyable, but I enjoyed the similar approach with just serving crab on the English muffin. It didn’t muddle things, it kept it all perfectly simple, allowing the crab to shine through.

I would have loved some bigger lumps of crab, but the crab itself was delicious and overall I appreciated that it was affordable.

The eggs were poached perfectly. I just love watching when velvety soft warm yolks start to trickle down when the eggs when cut. It blends really well with rich Hollandaise sauce.

The side of potatoes was a little bland, but I I didn’t mind that much as I do appreciate getting to season the potatoes myself as I often find they are under-salted or over-salted. The crust on the potatoes certainly made up for any deficiencies in the amount of salt used when preparing the potatoes. I love the good crust on homefries.

Crab Eggs Benedict_Millbrook Company_11

If you are in the area I suggest stopping by this charming small breakfast and lunch spot. The simple home-cooked meals for affordable prices make for a great place to visit. Be sure to check out the beautiful views from the pavilion too!

Dear Autumn @ 22 Months

September 26, 2015

Dear Autumn @ 22 Months

September, 2015

Dear Autumn,

You are such a smarty pants know it all. But all toddlers are!

You are so opinionated and I loved it so much. I love how you are finding your voice to indicate what you want. It can be something simple from which shoes you want to wear to something more frantic, like your immediately need to go outside with shouts of “SIDE!!!!” while dragging me to the door by a finger.

The amount of talking you do is incredible. I love that you parrot us all the time. I know once day that will back fire when you say something when we slip up, but right now it’s so precious how you mimic us. The thing that just makes us melt is when you say ‘tank you mommy’ and ‘tank you daddy’. It’s so sweet.

I swear you never stop moving. You are always buzzing with activity around the house or outside. I’m afraid that you are going to be so sad trapped inside the house this winter since you can’t get enough of being outside. You had a blast when we went apple picking arleady. I’m sure you won’t mind going again this season since mom can’t get enough of apples this year. Gotta live it up before we move to Florida!

When we were on The Cape for vacation you had so much attention for your cousins that you loved. You slept so, so horribly some times, but it was still a wonderful vacation as we were together as a big family and you got to play with everyone in the pool and at the beach. So much fun!

One morning we put Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on while we were on The Cape and since then you have been HOOKED. You asked for Mickey even before we get home from daycare so always have to explain to you that Mickey and the TV are resting as we don’t watch TV at night before you go to bed. But you get an episode of Mickey every morning while you have you morning ‘leche’. My favorite part is that you reply to the characters when they ask questions. LOVE IT!!

The hardest part about the time passing is that time is passing. It’s hard that it is speeding by so quickly. I think back to what we were doing last year, or even 6 months ago, and it’s insane how much bigger you are, how much more curious you are, how much more independent you are. I love your independence, but it it hurts some days when you don’t need the help. But at the same time you’re becoming more affectionate, so that’s a win!

Now, please let us brush your hair without fighting us! It’s looking crazy some days!! ha!!

I Love you!

Love,

Mommy

Our Wedding Pictures: Cocktail Hour, Introductions, & First Dance

September 24, 2015

Taggart Wedding_2015-109

As we held our ceremony right outside the hall at our venue, our cocktail hour immediately followed our ceremony.

Everyone moved from outside to inside to enjoy some great food, drinks, and music while mingling to chat with old and new friends. We wanted this to be a nice relaxed time where we could enjoy getting to chat with our guests so we made it an extended cocktail ‘hour’ as it ran 1 hr and 45 minutes. It worked out perfectly.

It meant to much to us that friends traveled near and far to join us for this special occasion.

Taggart Wedding_2015-132

Instead of a guest book, we set up a large frame on an easel that had a photo from our engagement session in it. People were able to write down messages to us. We are looking forward to swapping in a wedding photo in it and hanging it up in our bedroom.

Before we knew it, it was time for introductions!!

We grabbed our wedding party so we could make our formal introduction from the main entrance. Price and I selected the song ‘Celebration‘ by Kool and the Gang for everyone to walk dance in to. So much fun!!!

Taggart Wedding_2015-143

We moved right into the First Dance.

Price and I picked a little known song called “Anchor” by Mindy Gledhill. The song is lovely, but the reason that we picked it was for the lyrics. Love.

You anchor me back down”

Taggart Wedding_2015-149

We wanted a fun transition from our First Dance song to get everyone to dance with us so we quickly transitioned into “Shut and Dance” by Walk The Moon and rang to grab everyone to pull them onto the dance floor.

It was so much fun to get the party started. I even ripped my dress from all the action! But nothing so bad that a stapler couldn’t fix!!

The dancing continued for a bit until it was time for dinner.

Taggart Wedding_2015-155 Taggart Wedding_2015-156

Taggart Wedding_2015-157

We wanted the whole wedding to have a nice relaxed feel so we picked delicious, fun things for the dinner, including a mashed potato bar! We also served a variety of sliders, grilled chicken breast, and roasted vegetables. Having everyone make their own plates allowed for everyone from the kids to the adults to select exactly what they wanted to enjoy.

German’s Chocolate Cake Waffles

September 23, 2015

German's Chocolate Cake Waffles

Yesterday was Price’s Birthday!! Yay!!!

Price’s favorite cake is German’s Chocolate Cake so I had to make these in his honor.

German's Chocolate Cake Waffles_01

Price love German’s Chocolate Cake as it’s not your typical chocolate cake. It’s a nice dense cake that is then loaded up with a rich frosting that is made from cooked evaporated milk, shredded coconut, and pecans. That caramely coconut pecan frosting is signature to the cake. It makes every bite the perfect way to celebrate a birthday. (Plus, Price thinks it’s at it’s very best when served with some coffee ice cream!)

German's Chocolate Cake Waffles_02

I believe that you should be able to celebrate your birthday all day and if that means eating waffles that are basically like cake, then go for it!!

German's Chocolate Cake Waffles_05 German's Chocolate Cake Waffles_06

German's Chocolate Cake Waffles_07 German's Chocolate Cake Waffles_08

While Price enjoyed his German’s Chocolate Cake Waffles, he was a bit bummed that it wasn’t like when I made brownie waffles or when I made Birthday Cake Waffles using cake mix. He was looking for the typical super sweet coconut frosting to be spread on the waffle. And I was trying to go for a more breakfasty waffle so I decided to be more inspired by the frosting than just adapt it.

I just reason that you can have breakfast AND cake later on. HAHA!!

German's Chocolate Cake Waffles_09 German's Chocolate Cake Waffles_10

For these waffles, I made a chocolate waffle with a chocolate and pecan compound butter that was then topped off with loads of toasted coconut and chopped pecans. And pure maple syrup. And whipped cream. (Price is spoiled!)

German's Chocolate Cake Waffles_04

I think that the compound butter was perfectly sinful! It was chocolatey, nutty, and perfectly sweet. And butter is butter so that’s always good. I prefer using Kerrygold because it is such a great quality and is flavorful. You might ask yourself why should you care about the butter as the rest of the ingredients are going to mask any flavors from it. Trust me, it’s still worth it.

Most of all, I loved the combination of the flavors and the textures. It’s exactly why Price loves

German's Chocolate Cake Waffles_03

German’s Chocolate Cake Waffles

Ingredients

For the Waffles

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 cup Dutch process cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 whole eggs
  • 2 ounces unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled (I suggest Kerrygold)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 16 ounces buttermilk, room temperature
  • Vegetable spray, for waffle ironFor the Compound Butter
  • 4 ounces unsalted butter, at room temperature (I suggest Kerrygold)
  • 1/4 Cup powdered sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons dutch processed cocoa powder
  • 1/4 Cup finely chopped pecans

Toppings

  • 1/2 Cup Chopped Pecans
  • 1 Cup Shredded Coconut
  • Maple Syrup
  • Whipped Cream, Optional (but encouraged!)

Process

  1. Preheat waffle iron according to manufacturer’s directions.
  2. In a medium bowl whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.
  3. In another bowl beat together the eggs. Add in the melted butter, vanilla extract, and then add the buttermilk.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and stir just until combined. Allow to rest for at least 5 minutes.
  5. Ladle the recommended amount of waffle batter onto the center of the iron. Cook until steam stops escaping the sides of the waffle iron, and the waffle is crispy and easily removed from iron. Serve immediately or keep warm in a 200 degree F oven until ready to serve.
  6. To make the compound butter, combine all of the ingredients in a bowl. Blend until completely mix through.
  7. In a skillet, over low heat, toast the chopped pecans and shredded coconut. Mix to prevent burning. Toast until the coconut is golden brown.
  8. Serve by plating a warm waffle, dollop butter on the waffle, sprinkle with the toasted pecans and coconut, drizzle with maple syrup, and add whipped cream. Enjoy!

Our Wedding Pictures: Portraits

Taggart Wedding_2015-82

Soon after the ceremony, during the cocktail hour, we were whisked away to take photos together.  Luckily there were several areas around our wedding ceremony and reception  venue Crissey Farm for cute photo opps.

First we started in a little meadow highlighting the beauty of Berkshires in the background.

Taggart Wedding_2015-83

The main photographer, Danielle, owner of Lefebvre Photo, was wonderful at directing us throughout the photo session. She gave clear direction as to where we should stand, look, and lean to get well composed photos.

Plus we had fun, when when she yelled “now pick up your bride!”  And we got this gem!!!

Cookies and Cream Waffles

September 16, 2015

Cookies and Cream Dessert Waffles

Dessert Waffles!!!!

Cookies and Cream Waffles!!!!

Cookies and Cream Dessert Waffles_01

I was so excited about making these waffles. I have been thinking about them for months, but have only just gotten around to them now. Totally worth the wait!

Kinda like my wait to watch Nick Carter on Dancing with the Stars. Yep, exactly the same…

Cookies and Cream Dessert Waffles_02

I love watching Dancing with the Stars. LOVE IT. I can’t dance to save my life. So I love watching people dance. It amazes me that people can move their bodies like that. And I can’t resist DWTS because there are people to support and cheer for. And this year… Nick Carter… I just can’t handle it. He was my boy band crush for years. Cheering him on now is like reliving my middle & high school years watching him on TRL and award shows, except now I’m drinking wine while watching.

I can’t wait to watch the rest of this season.

Cookies and Cream Dessert Waffles_05 Cookies and Cream Dessert Waffles_06

Cookies and Cream Dessert Waffles_07 Cookies and Cream Dessert Waffles_08

Anyway, such important stuff right here…  these Cookies and Cream Waffles are

if I had to pick only one ice cream to have for the rest of my life it would be Cookies and Cream. It’s an obvious choice. I love it. My hands down favorite.

Cookies and Cream Dessert Waffles_03

So when I was scheming to make another recipe for my #WaffleWednesday posts I started to think about making a waffle to celebrate my love of the best ice cream flavor of all time And that’s how I came up with this Cookies and Cream Waffle.

Cookies and Cream Dessert Waffles_04

Cookies and Cream Waffle

Makes 4-6 waffles, depending on amount of batter you use for each waffle

Ingredients

For the waffles

  • 8 Oreo cookies, crushed
  • 1 egg
  • 1 Cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 Cup + 2 Tablespoons milk
  • 1/4 Cup vegetable oil
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the whipped cream

  • 1 Cup heavy whipping cream
  • 8 Oreo Cookies, crushed

Optional Toppings

  • Vanilla Ice Cream
  • Chocolate Sauce
  • Roughly chopped Oreo Cookies

Process

  1. Preheat waffle iron.
  2. Vigorously whisk the egg, milk, and oil in large bowl.
  3. Mix in flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and vanilla extract until just smooth. Fold in the crushed Oreo Cookies.
  4. Spray the preheated waffle iron with a non-stick cooking spray.
  5. Ladle 1/3-1/2 cup of the batter the onto hot waffle iron. Cook until golden brown. Remove and place on a cooling rack
  6. While the waffles are cooking, make your whipped cream by beating in a large bowl or in a stand mixer until you have stiff peaks. Fold in the crushed Oreo Cookies.
  7. Assemble your waffle by topping one with whipped cream, ice cream, chocolate sauce, and more Oreo Cookie pieces.

Bacon, Apple, Brie, and Spinach Sandwich

September 15, 2015

Bacon Apple Brie Spinach Sandwich

Bacon. Apple. Brie. Spinach.

Let’s call it a B.A.B.S. Sandwich!!

Boom. Shakalaka.

Bacon Apple Brie Spinach Sandwich-1

I am head over heels in love with this sandwich.

Salty, crunchy bacon. Check!

Crisp, juicy apples. Check!

Soft, luscious brie. Check!

Fresh, vibrant baby spinach. Check!

All of that on hearty bread that is slathered with a Dijon mayonnaise. Check!

Bacon Apple Brie Spinach Sandwich-2

I don’t often make sandwiches so when I do it is an event. And this is really good. I love B.L.T’s but I was craving something that felt a bit more fall like than summer. I’ll never turn down a beautiful, ripe tomato, but I wanted to change things up for the upcoming season so I swapped them out for apples. I’d just have to enjoy a PSL while eating the sandwich and it would be a perfect fall meal. #basicandlovingit

I swear the uses of bacon, apples, and brie are endless. It’s just one of those combinations that is timeless. Like peanut butter and jelly, but better because you deserve better. You’re an adult. Eat an adult sandwich!!

Bacon Apple Brie Spinach Sandwich-6 Bacon Apple Brie Spinach Sandwich-7 Bacon Apple Brie Spinach Sandwich-8 Bacon Apple Brie Spinach Sandwich-9

I used the Ginger Golds that we picked when we recently went apple picking as they are great eating apples, plus they don’t oxidize and turn brown quickly like a lot of other varieties, so they will taste great and look great in the sandwich.

And of course, bacon is key to this sandwich. We all know that bacon is a versatile ingredient and is easily incorporated into everything from breakfast dishes to burgers to pastas, and, of course, sandwiches. I think that any kind of bacon works but I used Trader Joe’s Apple Smoked Bacon.

Bacon Apple Brie Spinach Sandwich-3

I argue that you need a nice, hearty bread for this sandwich. The bread is just as much a key player in this game as the rest of the ingredients. It is what starts and ends the sandwich. Show it some love.

I recently made one of these sandwiches, stood at my door while eating it, taking in the sheets of rain dump down from the grey clouds above. It definitely made for a better rainy afternoon.

Bacon Apple Brie Spinach Sandwich-4

Bacon Apple Brie Spinach Sandwich-5

Bacon, Apple, Brie, and Spinach Sandwich

Makes 2 sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of thick, hearty sandwich bread
  • 6 slices of bacon
  • 1/2 apple (I suggest a Ginger Gold), sliced thinly
  • 4 ounces of brie, sliced thinly
  • 1 Cup baby spinach
  • 2 Tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 Tablespoons Dijon mustard

Process

  1. Preheat oven to 350. Line baking sheet. Cut the bacon slices in half, horizontally. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until cooked through. (Time depends on thickness of bacon) Remove and place on paper towels.
  2. Mix to there the mayonnaise and the Dijon mustard.
  3. Spread the mayonnaise mixture on one side of all 4 pieces of bread.
  4. On each sandwich, layer half the spinach a slice of bread, lace 3 piece of bacon on the spinach, then top with slices of brie and apple, then with 3 more pieces of bacon. Top with the remaining slice of bread. Enjoy!!

Our Wedding Pictures: Ceremony

September 10, 2015

Taggart Wedding_2015-49

The weather was beautiful on our wedding day, June 13, 2015, so we held our wedding ceremony on the side lawn at our venue, Crissey Farm. The setting was beautiful in front of their arbor that the venue helped us decorate with big white, yellow, and grey poms and lanterns.

The ceremony kicked off with our moms walking down together to take their seats. It was so sweet that they did this together.

Autumn was in the care of her amazing daycare teacher and her daughter for the day and night.

After my sister and my best friend walked down the aisle, my dad and I started to make our way down the aisle to “Falling in Love” by Ingrid Michealson.

Of course, Autumn wanted to join me on the walk down the aisle too. She joined us for the walk so that Price could give her a big hug and kiss before we started the ceremony.

Hugs to my dad when the officiant asked if he would give me away.

We had originally planned on our family friend performing our ceremony as she is an officiant in New Hampshire, but temporarily transferring her officiant duties over to Massachusetts for the day was proving quite difficult. In the end we found an officiant available in the town where we were married, and settled on having Mary perform a reading for us.

Mary beautifully read the poem “The Key To Love”  (Author Unknown), which really meant so much to us.

We then said our vows to each other.

We wrote our own vows that were personal to us and our relationship. It felt so great to write them ourselves (even if I did it at the last minute!). It made our commitment to each other every more special as we mentioned special moments over our 10 year relationship in the vows.

Almost kissed!!!

After Price recited his vows we almost kissed!! It was just one of those reflexes that we naturally wanted to do after such a special moment. We both leaned in almost kissed but caught ourselves in the nick of time.

And then we exchanged our rings.
