Book Club. 2015 Part 3

December 29, 2015

A Book is a dream in your hands

(Source)

Now that you have your brand spankin’ new Kindles and Amazon gift cards from Christmas, you need some books!!

And I have some suggestions!

After a summer filled with a lot of reading I eased off a bit as I tackled other things with my free time, but I took that break to regroup and figure out what books I wanted to add to my wishlist and then dove right back in.

Currently Reading…

fursiously happy

Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson

I just received this and I’m devouring it.

I was cracking up while reading it when I was getting a pedicure last night. I think I made this confusing and difficult for my manicurist. But it was so good!!!!

It’s by Jenny Lawson, The Bloggess, who is a fantastic story-teller who has the best taxidermy ever. She even said ‘Lady Garden‘ on CNN. So she pretty much is my hero.

icy sparks book

Icy Sparks by Gwyn Hyman Rubio

Yep, still trying to get through this. I wanted to like it. I really did. But it’s not holding my attention so I keep putting it down and reading others instead of it.

We’ll see what happens in the next month with this.

Just Read These Bad Boys…

barbara-the-slut-and-other-people

Barbara the Slut and Other People by Lauren Holmes

I saw this book on in a photo on the IG page of Melissa Hartwig, the co-creator of Whole30. I had absolutely no idea what it was about when I bought it on an impulse.

It’s a collection of short stories that are honest, in depth, and refreshing. Through various story tellers you hear the stories of 20-something women as they explore their identities, self-worth, and sexual relationships.

I loved them all. Go read it. ASAP

Trouble Maker

Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology by Leah Remini

I admit that I have a full on big addiction to all things Scientology. In general, I have a great interest in all religions related to their origins, how they function and are organized, why people join, and even why people stay when they have doubts. Basically, all of it.

I breezed through this as it was a light read, and I was so interested in Leah’s experience with Scientology that I couldn’t put it down.

Her experience is really interesting and I found her really brave for going through it, surviving it, and for sharing it. Plus, I just love her humor and personality.

(Can we ditch Erin Andrews on DTWS and get Leah to co-host? I loved when she was filling in for Erin this year.)

The Leaving of Things

The Leaving of Things by Jay Antani

I think I picked this up when it popped up as a suggestion in my Kindle Store and I’m glad I grabbed it as it was not normally something I thought I would enjoy but it was.

It’s an interesting ‘coming of age’ book about an Indian teenager who has to go back to India after 10 years in the US with his family when his father gets a great job there. It shares his struggles to embrace his culture again as he misses the US so much.

I left like I could relate to it as I am embarking on a big move soon. I am looking forward to it, but I am sure there will be things that I will miss about Boston, like how the teen can’t wait to get back to the states, but will still miss India. I needed to read this book at this time.

everybody rise

Everybody Rise: A Novel by Stephanie Clifford

I won this book on a blog giveaway and I’m glad I did. It was really enjoyable

It was somewhat relate-able as I grew up in Greenwich, CT which is well known for its WASP-iness, so I couldn’t easily imagine these characters. I couldn’t exactly relate as I didn’t grow up in the wealthy areas, but I was on the fringe, like how the main character was. I’m certainly glad I moved so I didn’t get sucked into the world of excess that the main character so eagerly strived for.

You  keep rooting for her to get her act together, but at the same time you are rooting for her to get taken down a notch.

The Ghost Network Book

The Ghost Network: A Novel by Catie DiSabato

I feel that I am still confused by this book but I liked it.

I think it would be a great movie. There were so many things that were described beautifully that I wish I could see it come to life. There would be some great chase and fight scenes to capture.

It was a little difficult to follow at times as there were so many things to juggle as there were several layers to the story, but it was worth it all coming together in the end.

Christmas.2015 Part 2

Christmas.2015 Part 2

We had such a great Christmas this year. We basically celebrated it twice. First we had Autumn open gifts on the Sunday before Christmas so that she would have time to play with them that day and the week. And then we had Christmas all over again on Christmas with Price’s family, who we visited with for the weekend.

Christmas.2015 Part 2_02 Christmas.2015 Part 2_01

We got ready on Christmas morning and got out of the house as fast as possible (even forgetting Autumn’s antibiotics in the process… thanks to our Dr for refilling that quickly!). The 6-hour drive is never really fun, but Autumn’s extra frantic screaming of  ‘Go!’ and ‘Down!’ made it extra enjoyable. ha!

But we survived and were greeted with big hugs all around once we arrived. And Autumn made out like a bandit with all her new goodies for the play kitchen we got her for, tons of books, and some fun Mickey & Minnie things. Like a Minnie ‘brella that Autumn would has since carried around with her everywhere. I think she would sleep with it if we let her.

 Christmas.2015 Part 2_03

Christmas.2015 Part 2_04

There was a gorgeous full moon on Christmas that Price got some pictures of from the front lawn. I decided to remain warm in the house. ha!

Christmas.2015 Part 2_05 Christmas.2015 Part 2_06

On Saturday morning, Price, his sister, his father, Autumn, and I went out to breakfast at the Willow Glen Cafe. Can’t beat big portions for an affordable price. Autumn even did decent work on her plate sized pancake!

Christmas.2015 Part 2_07

The Town of Skaneateles is located at the top of Skaneateles Lake, one of New York’s Finger Lakes. The water is so clear

Christmas.2015 Part 2_08 Christmas.2015 Part 2_09

Christmas.2015 Part 2_10 Christmas.2015 Part 2_11

Stop it Skaneateles, just stop. Stop being so picturesque and cute!

Unfortunately, we missed the the Annual Dickens Christmas in Skaneateles, which runs through Christmas Eve, where community members act out the story around town. But I did get a kick out of the wooden characters placed around The Village.

Christmas.2015 Part 2_12

Christmas.2015 Part 2_13 Christmas.2015 Part 2_14

Christmas.2015 Part 2_15

After Autumn’s nap we headed over to Price’s brother’s house so we could all hang out while the kids opened the last of the gifts.  I love when everyone is together hanging out.

Christmas.2015 Part 2_16

Christmas.2015 Part 2_17

I love that the kids had a blast playing together. They did it all from playing hair dresser to Aunt Catherine, playing with Play-Doh and a new tea set, and hiding behind the sofa.

Christmas.2015 Part 2_18 Christmas.2015 Part 2_19

Don’t mind Autumn, she just makes herself at home to paint!

With all the fun activity with her cousins, Autumn went to bed about an hour later than normal, and *magically* woke up about 2 hours earlier than normal. How does that work?!?!

Thankfully, Price and I managed to sneak away on Saturday night for a drink and dessert at The Krebs in town. Then we headed over to Price’s friend’s house to catch up with them. We stayed much later than planned but I believe that is just a sign that you are having a great time. Or just horrifying them with the stories and advice you have since they are expecting a little boy in May!

Christmas.2015 Part 2_20 Christmas.2015 Part 2_21

Sunday morning was rough since Autumn got up 2 hours earlier than normal. Thankfully, Price let me sleep in while he brought Autumn out for an earlier breakfast with his father, sister, brother, and his 3 kids.

Autumn was having a rough morning since she was so tired, but nothing an early and extra long nap couldn’t fix!!

We then spent the afternoon with Price’s friends again. The guys watched football and the girls played with cats and talked important things like maternity leave and breast pump bras. ha!! Best of all they have 2 cats and Autumn had a blast playing with them and repeatedly telling them ‘Hi cat! Hi Gatos!”.

Christmas.2015 Part 2_22

The Taggart Cousins!

I love that Autumn has such great cousins on both my side and Price’s side. She always has a blast with them from adventures in NY to running around the YMCA after breakfast. You can’t beat that! We are really looking forward to everyone playing together at the beaches and theme parks in FL. Can’t wait!

Christmas.2015 Part 2_23

We took a few family pictures on Monday morning before we left for our trip home. It was wonderful to get some pictures and annoy Autumn with lots of kisses!

Christmas.2015 Part 2_24 Christmas.2015 Part 2_25

These are by far my favorite photos of the weekend. Maybe ever. I want to eat her up!

Christmas.2015 Part 2_26

And of course I had to sneak a selfie in!

It was such a fantastic Christmas!

Christmas.2015- Part 1

Christmas.2015- Part 1

We did Christmas with Autumn this past Sunday.

The joys of having a 2 year old who doesn’t know what day of the week it is!

Christmas.2015- Part 1-01 Christmas.2015- Part 1

We will be traveling on Christmas so we figured it wouldn’t be much fun to rush in the morning to get her to open presents just to get her in the car. “Hey, here’s your brand spanking new kitchen set! But, sorry, gotta go now. Don’t worry you’ll see it in a few days!”

Christmas.2015- Part 1

Christmas.2015- Part 1 Christmas.2015- Part 1

Christmas.2015- Part 1-07

Unfortunately, Autumn had a nasty cold so she was feeling and looking really lousy. But she still enjoyed the gifts and fun she had playing around with her new toys.

She loves playing with the kitchen set at daycare so we wanted to get her a kitchen set for Christmas if her very own. The rest of her gifts were themed around that to stock her kitchen with pot, pans, and food.

Christmas.2015- Part 1

Christmas.2015- Part 1-08 Christmas.2015- Part 1-09

My mom was up visiting from Florida so she was able to get to enjoy our mock Christmas with Autumn as well. Sadly, Autumn was feeling so sick so we didn’t get to do all the fun things we had planned for the weekend. But we’ll be in Florida soon so she will get plenty of time to hang out with Autumn so that should make up for it. ha!

Christmas.2015- Part 1

And then she crashed!

Later on in the afternoon, we went to her Dr’s office to get her checked out. She ended up getting some meds to treat her ear infection and hopefully prevent pink eye, as she has spent the last 2 days rubbing her mocos (boogers!) in her eyes and all over her face. Fun!

Christmas.2015- Part 1-11

Regardless to what or when you celebrate, just enjoy it!

Happy Holidays!

Thanksgiving. 2015

December 1, 2015

Thanksgiving_2015

Thanksgiving really kicked off for us the weekend before the actual holiday. Thanksgiving was a week-long festivity this year. It was so nice.

On Sunday we had our own Thanksgiving turkey dinner full of turkey, slow-cooker mashed potatoes, stuffing, honey roasted carrots, cranberries, and rolls.

Thanksgiving_2015-01

I went super casual at work on Wednesday with this ah-mazing tee that my blogging bestie Amanda and I both bought to celebrate this Thanksgiving. We’re awesome like that.

Thanksgiving_2015-02

Truth be told, I had a major meltdown over brunch on Thanksgiving. Ya see, I decided that I was gonna ‘fancy up’ our breakfast by making waffled eggs benedict. Well, do you know how much of a pain in the ass it is to try to coordinate the cooking and timing of making the waffle base, poaching the eggs, and making a Hollandaise Sauce while the most adorable toddler keeps pulling you away from the stove so you can race doll strollers around the living room?

After having a lovely sob fest over over cooked poached eggs and a very separated Hollandaise, Autumn and I headed out to the beach so I could mellow out and so Price could recover from the exorcism he just witnessed in the kitchen.

The beach was nice and calming for me and Autumn so we were both energized and tired afterwards. She took an awesome 2 hour nap in the afternoon. Awesome!

The rest of the day was relaxing with some Chinese food take out for our dinner after Autumn went to bed. It was not the typical Thanksgiving fare, but it was perfect to stuff our faces with dumplings, crab rangoon, General Tao’s, and shrimp egg fu young.

Thanksgiving_2015-03 Thanksgiving_2015-04

Friday was the ‘real’ Thanksgiving for us as that is when we got together with family for the big turkey meal. We headed up to New Hampshire to Price’s sister’s house were we really enjoyed our time with family, the beautiful warm weather, and lots of Harvest Spaced Punch (recipe on the blog on Friday).

Thanksgiving_2015-05

 Thanksgiving_2015-06 Thanksgiving_2015-07

Autumn did so well going with the flow with a later than normal nap on the sofa, which was nice since she typically is very schedule driven.

Thanksgiving_2015-09

The long weekend continued on into a lazy, rainy Saturday. There was tons of coloring, playing with play-doh, and watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (duh). I even got the best nap in bed, under a pile of clean clothes, that a girl could ask for.

We (Price) pulled out the tree and decorations so we decorated our tree and the house. It makes me wish that Christmas trees were an all year round thing. At least Christmas lights. Since they are so cheerful. Like, right now, they help offset the misery that sets in when the sun sinks below the horizon just after 4.30pm. Ugh.

Thanksgiving_2015-08 Thanksgiving_2015-10

The rest of the weekend was great with a solo Target run, lounging around late into the afternoon in new pajamas that have waffles on them, some”You’ve Got Mail”, and a Patriots loss in OT. ha! And I even mastered my eggs benedict!

It was just a wonderful weekend to be thankful to spend time with family.

Halloween. 2015

October 31, 2015

Halloween_2015-36

Autumn loves Minnie so much that when I found a Minnie costume that would fit actually fit her I snatched it up. Of course, I based our costumes off of her’s so Price was Mickey and I was Daisy Duck.

Halloween_2015-1

But first, we started our Halloween a day early as Autumn went to daycare in costume on Friday in a spider costume. She actually wears it regularly. ha!

Halloween_2015-2 Halloween_2015-3

Price and I were having a rough week so we decided to perk ourselves up by having tons of fun on Halloween.

As it is our last Halloween up here, we decided to go up to Salem to enjoy the festivities up here. Price and I had been once before for Halloween with our friends Emily and Peter and it was a lot of fun and really busy. We didn’t want to deal with the crazy crowds so we decided to go up for breakfast, enjoy the morning there, and head home before lunch.

Halloween_2015-4 Halloween_2015-5

We went to The Ugly Mug for breakfast. (thanks for thesuggestion Twitter Peeps!!) It was so good that we are already planning on our next visit there.

Halloween_2015-6

Minnie and Mickey!!!

Halloween_2015-7

After breakfast, we headed out to wander around Salem.

We first visited the Witch Trials Memorial before heading over to the adjoining Charter Street Burning Point.

Halloween_2015-8 Halloween_2015-9

Halloween_2015-10 Halloween_2015-11 Halloween_2015-12

I love the rich history that is scattered throughout New England. It’s incredible in Boston and the surrounding areas.

Witches were everywhere!

Halloween_2015-17

At least this witch was a nice one!

I told Autumn to wiggle her nose like Samantha. She looked at me strange.

Halloween_2015-18

Halloween_2015-19 Halloween_2015-21

Halloween_2015-20

There is a fantastic exhibit called Stickwork at the Peabody Essex Museum that we will come back to visit in depth one day. Especially in the snow!

Also, they have another exhibit that we want to see one day so we will be back soon.

Halloween_2015-22

Halloween_2015-23

I will defiently miss Fall in New England when we move. I can’t stop taking pictures of the changing pictures so I can capture all the carious hues of greens, yellows, oranges, reds, and purples that fill the trees and sidewalks.

Halloween_2015-24

Halloween_2015-25

I mean, come on…

Halloween_2015-26 Halloween_2015-27

There was a festival for kids on the Salem Common. They had dressed up characters that Autumn loved/was scared of, games, bounce houses, and face painting.

Halloween_2015-28 Halloween_2015-29

The bounce house maze experience was greeted with so much enthusiasm (she tried to go in before it was fully set up!!) but some big kids (4 yo’s?) ventured back through and they didn’t mean to scare her but did so we had to yank her from the side and she clawed for her freedom. Poor Minnie!!

Halloween_2015-30

Hey dude. Thanks for settling Salem.

Halloween_2015-31 Halloween_2015-32

Halloween_2015-33

Halloween_2015-34

Halloween_2015-35 Halloween_2015-37

We wrapped up our Salem adventure with some more wandering around and some shopping just after 11am and headed home.

Autumn was so upset to be leaving but she was just over tired from the busy morning as the hysterics lasted a minute before she was passed out for the ride home.

Halloween_2015-38

Keep it up New England. You rock this time of year.

Halloween_2015-39

We carved our pumpkins in the afternoon after watching a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Halloween special (but of course!). Plus, I made an apple crisp and a frity flax oat bran bread. The house smelled so good from the baking and the hot cider we had warming on the stove.

Later on, Autumn and I went out for an hour for trick-o-treating. It was confusing to her but she had fun with it.

Halloween_2015-40 Halloween_2015-41

She was wiped out after it so she ended up going to bed at 6pm! Now that’s a great day!!!

Unfortunately we don’t get a lot of trick-o-treaters. It’s a nasty cycle in our neighborhood… kids don’t go here because people don’t hand out candy>>> people don’t hand out candy because kids don’t come here. This doesn’t sit well with me as I LOVE to hand out candy to kids in costumes.

I ended up calling my Dad to see what we would be getting ourselves into next year when we are down in FL with him and he had to just rub it in that he had 300 kids. OMG!!!!!

I’m thankful we had such a great day celebrating Halloween in Salem this year.Mickey, Minnie, and Daisy had a great Halloween!!!

Book Club. 2015 Part 2

October 2, 2015

reading

I’ve been ferociously reading books lately. It’s like I just rediscovered how great reading is and I need to make up for a slow spring. It’s great. I love it.

Currently Reading…

The Ghost Network Book

The Ghost Network: A Novel by Catie DiSabato

I got this from a recommendation based upon the books I’ve recently been reading. I think the topic is really interesting as it deals with the disappearance of a popstar (think Lady Gaga), but I am not loving the style of writing, but I’m hooked at the same time. Kinda when you love to hate something, but do like it. I find it a bit slow but I find it so attention getting.

I’m looking forward to getting to the end, but to just getting to the end, but to see where the story takes me as there so so many pieces to it.

icy sparks book

Icy Sparks by Gwyn Hyman Rubio

I took this book from the house in Maine during our last visit in July. I’ve seen it for years in the house and have flipped through it but I finally asked Elaine if I could borrow it.

I’ve slowly been reading this book as it’s not the lightest book to read, but it’s an interesting story (so far) about a young girl with tourettes in the 1950’s in the rural Kentucky. She struggles with relating to her peers and teachers in school, and then her onset of tourettes increases her struggles as she doesn’t understand what is happening to her and her impulses get her in trouble.

I am looking forward to where this book takes Icy.

Just Read These Bad Boys…

easily amused book

Easily Amused by Karen McQuestion

I was going through Amazon’s Kindle Store and found this book in their deals section. I’ve gotten some great books during their flash sales, so I figured I’d try it again with this pick. It had a good rating so I figured I’d give it a spin.

Like some of my other summer reads, I thought that it was light and fun.

the life list

The Life List: A Novel by Lori Nelson Spielman

This book was suggested to me from my friend Dawn. I’m glad she suggested it as it was a fun summer read.

I breezed through this book because it was a light read and I enjoyed it so much. I liked how the main character, Brett, rediscovers herself through her old life list. Her journey at finding happiness while abandoning her materialistic life behind her seems sincere and heartfelt. Her struggles are ones that we can relate to in our own ways.

There were points when things seemed a bit vague, like the value of the inheritance, or just came together too well, like Mr. Trenchcoat, but overall it was a book that I enjoyed and would suggest.

It made me want to think back to my old life lists and try to remember what I wrote down to see if I was on the path I imagined when I was a young teenager. I think that while some of my life list goals have changed since then I am still on the right path.

Big-Little-Lies

Big Little Lies by Laine Moriarty

I bought this the very afternoon after I finished Moriarty’s The Husband’s Secret. I enjoyed it so much that I had to get another one of her’s ASAP.

the husbands secret book

The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty

It’s really amazing what we secrets we keep.

From the little secrets to the big ones. They all impact us in various ways from how to react to others to how we view ourselves. I continued to think about that, and what if’s, while reaching this book. I tried to put myself in the shoes of main characters and imagine what I would do if I was them. It kept me on my toes while I was trying to figure out how the story would reach it’s apex.

the girl on the train book

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

I didn’t love the beginning of it, but once I got about 20-30 pages in I was hooked. HOOKED. I loved reading it. It was so good. I wanted to slap the main character so many times but I still felt invested in her and the story.

I didn’t see the end going the way it did and I loved it for that.

 The Boston Girl

The Boston Girl: A Novel by Anita Diamant

This book is exactly why I love scrapbooking. And blogging!

It was such a wonderful read about a woman recanting her life to her granddaughter. I loved the storytelling aspect of it. It was told in a charming way that made it seem like that grandmother was talking right to you, as well. I found that it was a good reminder that our parents and grandparents lived these amazing lives before us so we really should shit down to take the time to talk to them.

It was set in and around Boston, which I just loved too. As I’ve lived here for the past 12 years, I enjoyed reading about the North End, Brookline, Roxbury, and, the further out, Rockport. I did a lot of googling of places and restaurants after reading about them to pull up old pictures and maps. So fun.

Book Club. 2015 Part 1

anna quindlen quote

{Sourced}

I wish I was able to read as much as I wanted to. I wish I could just curl up with a good book and get lost for hours in the pages full of different settings, characters, and thick plots.

Sadly, life does not afford me that luxury so I typically do most of my reading while on the bus to and from work. Thankfully, I’ve actually been getting up from my desk during lunch to sit outside so I’ve been reading then as well lately. Can’t be summer reading!

I have a big stack of books I still want to conquer this summer. Wish me luck!

Currently Reading…

The Boston Girl

The Boston Girl by Anita Diamant

It was suggested to me via Kindle after finishing We are Called To Rise. I picked it because I wanted to read this book about an interesting, strong young woman while it was set in Boston a hundred years ago.I just started it so I’ve just dipped my toe into it but so far I like it and it’s fun imagining Boston back then.

Just Read These Bad Boys…

the ninth wife

The Ninth Wife by Amy Stolls

I read this in Maine over 4th of July weekend. I really, really enjoyed it. I didn’t want to put it down. There were real moments when I just wouldn’t. Even reading in the car on the way back home, which typically makes me sick.

I liked the story telling as it was Third-Person Point of View, which I think worked well for the story and I don’t often read, so it was a nice change. Plus, the way that the story was broken up with alternating chapters about Bess and Rory. It had a nice flow to it.

The one part that I didn’t like what how the author sorta brushed over an elderly abusive relationship. I understand that relationships are complicated, complex, dynamic, but the way that the author had the main character, Bess, address the abuse seemed flawed or even passive. I dunno.

we are called to rise

We are Called to Rise by Laura McBride

I L-O-V-E-D this book.

I came across this book from a suggestion from blogger Stephanie Howell, who has an Instagram account dedicated to her passion for reading. She mentioned how much she loved it so I wanted to give it a try, and I ended up loving it as well.

The book weaves the stories of 3 main characters together in such a way that has you begging for more with each page. I loved the style of writing and story. It was written beautifully and it comes together in the end so well, while still leaving you with so many questions.

Highly recommend this book!

*For years I have followed Stephanie Howell on various social media platforms as she is a fantastic scrapbooker and I have loved her work and style. Like me, her scrapbooking has taken a back seat to the mess of other stuff we juggle in our daily lives, but I have still followed her adventures of rising 4 girls abroad with her military husband. Anyway, she has always been a voracious reader and now she is sharing her passion for books on her blog and new IG account, WhatStephReads. Go follow along and you’ll be sure to get some great reads.

the heart collector

The Heart Collector by Jacques Vandroux

This is written by the same author who wrote The Bone Collector, which was a major motion picture years ago. It started Ashley Judd and I love her so I loved the movie. Anyway, I didn’t immediately realize it was by the same author when I selected it from a few free Kindle books I was offered- love when Kindle does that!

I liked how it blended a bit of fantasy with faith. It did get a bit predictable in the end but it was cool how all the different characters wove together. I liked how the author described the towns and cathedrals where the different murders occurred. It made me want to book a flight to France.

flirting with felicity

Flirting with Felicity by Gerri Russell

I don’t really read romance novels but I received some free Kindle book offers and selected this one as one of the books to receive.

It was fun and quick to read. Kinda a good summer beach read. I actually read it on the cruise we went on in January.

It sort of reminded me of the Fifty Shades of Grey books, but without the submissive relationship and (excessively) described sex. The story was pretty typical – strong, yet poor girl meets rich, flawed guy, at first there is friction, but once they get to know each other and let their guards down they fall for each other. If you like romance novels then I bet you will like this.

The Book of Joe

The Book of Joe: A Novel by Jonathan Tropper

This book reminded me of a s007-08 show called October Road, which also features a national bestselling author, who wrote some not so nice things about his hometown, and has to goes back years later. He discovers a lot about himself and the people that he left behind.

I can’t get enough of Jonathan Tropper’s writing style. I loved how raw and real he makes the characters, and Joe is pretty flawed so it’s a good read to read about his complex feelings. He struggles with a lot to find happiness and I think that we can all relate to that feeling at various points in our lives so you can connect with him and you really root for him, even when he is acting like a jerk,
