Hello Juno

February 1, 2015

2015 Blizzard Juno

Juno might have slighted the New York area but it hit us hard in Boston.

We ended up with 24.6 inches, making it the 6th biggest storm in Boston’s recorded history. It actually dumped 36″ in Framingham, about 20 miles away from where we live. It was all awesome and annoying at the same time.

It shut down the city, including the MBTA, on Tuesday as there were blizzard conditions throughout most of the day. So we were all home on Tuesday as the snow swirled all around.

2015 Blizzard Juno-1 2015 Blizzard Juno-2

As the snow eased up in the afternoon we all went out to check out the snow.

Autumn hated her snow suit but she loved being outside so the moment we went outside she stopped screaming bloody murder. And started again the moment we crossed the threshold again. Our babe just loves to be outside at all times.

2015 Blizzard Juno-3

Her long beautiful eye lashes caught falling snow flakes.

2015 Blizzard Juno-4

2015 Blizzard Juno-5 2015 Blizzard Juno-6

Poor Price spent over 8 hours between Tuesday, Wednesday morning and night outside with the snow-blower cleaning up the driveway, walkway, and stairs. The piles are taller than me in some areas.

And while Price busted his butt out there for hours and hours we stayed cozy inside making cookies. I really do think that I have perfected my chocolate chip cookie recipe at this point. yay!

She stole my pen. He stole her blanket and chair.

 2015 Blizzard Juno-10

Price took these pictures of our street on Tuesday night once the wind lessened and rate of snow coming down slowed down. More people felt brave enough to come out of their houses to start digging out.

Oh, and we’re supposed to get more snow tomorrow!! ugh.

A Sweet Treat: The Boston Chocolate Workshop

January 5, 2015

Boston Chocolate Making Class

I’ve lived in Boston for over 10 years and I’ve done my fair share of exploring around the city. Price and I spent a Saturday years and years ago being hometown tourists walking the Freedom Trail. I’ve been to a lot of festivals, I’ve shopped the markets, taken a duck boat ride, but I haven’t done any food tours. I’m missing out!!!

I recently heard of Boston Chocolate Tours and how they host tours taking people all around Boston’s Back Bay or South End to sample different chocolate delicacies. That sounds awesome but it’s the dead of winter now so that sounded delightfully horrible… brrr cold!… so next best option is their chocolate making class. Yes, please!!

Boston Chocolate Making Class-01

Held one Saturday a month in a private function room of the Elephant and Castle, you take a 2 – 2 1/2 hour class where you learn about where chocolate is grown, how it’s made, enjoy hot chocolate (different than hot cocoa!), and you get to make your own truffles too!!

Boston Chocolate Making Class-02 Boston Chocolate Making Class-03

While I say you learn so much, it’s not boring, like being back in school, since the teacher keeps it fun, light, and not too technical. No slides or power points to fall asleep to, but you won’t leave scratching your head either.

Like, cocoa nib are just raw dried cocoa beans that have been broken up. We got to ‘make’ cocoa nibs and test out cocoa butter, which really is a wonderful moisturizer.

Boston Chocolate Making Class-04

The class was taught by Chef Dorian McCarron, who has over 15 years experience as a pastry chef. As well, he competed on and won on the 2nd season of Sweet Genius, a Food Network competition similar to Chopped, but with sweets as the main focus.

His passion for chocolate is a pure as the chocolate we used in class. For example, he explained that REAL chocolate only has 5 ingredients in it – cocoa butter, cocoa liquor, sugar, soy lecithin, and real vanilla- and how a lot of chocolate companies don’t sell real chocolate. This really stuck with me as I have been doing a lot of baking recently and I have noticed that the chips I get from various companies have a different quality to them. If you are looking to use the best stuff then get Ghirardelli, Lindt, Green and Black’s (also organic!), Godiva, and Baker’s. And even Trader Joe’s sells the real stuff! However, Hershey’s and Nestle isn’t the real stuff… sad face. But lesson learned so I’m only getting the good stuff from now on! Thanks Chef McCarron!!

Boston Chocolate Making Class-05 Boston Chocolate Making Class-06

Boston Chocolate Making Class-07 Boston Chocolate Making Class-08

As well, I learned the ins and outs of tempering chooclate, in a pretty simple way.

I always took it for granted, but learning the science behind it has opened my eyes to why it’s so important. It makes me want to get a tempering machine. Just kidding! Those babies are like 3K! Whaa? But not to be discouraged, you can temper chocolate yourself as home with a heat safe bowl set upon pot with some water in it. The water CAN NOT touch the bottom of the bowl! You need a space for the steam to swirl around in between the surface of the water and bottom of the bowl. And a whisk. And your arm. Just start moving that chocolate- yes, even before it’s melted- and don’t stop! You’ll need to add more chocolate in when the chocolate is melted and at the right temperature. Chef McCarron broke it down in an easy to follow way that makes me want to really give it a try. And make more truffles!

Boston Chocolate Making Class-09

Fellow Boston based food blogger Taryn attended the class as well.

She went with her mom, which is such a great idea. I think this class would be great for mothers and daughters to take. As well, it would be great for couples. A fun, sweet date.

Boston Chocolate Making Class-10 Boston Chocolate Making Class-11

Boston Chocolate Making Class-12 Boston Chocolate Making Class-13

There was various options for you to roll your truffles in or on after you dipped them in the tempered chocolate.

I generally just rolled my chocolate and them rolled them in the toppings- toffee, cocoa nibs, cocoa powder, toasted coconut, and powdered sugar- as dipping them in the tempered chocolate was quite stressful to me. I was so afraid that it would fall off the dipping fork and them mess up the tempered chocolate, ruining it. I’m just a ball of nerves for no real reason when it comes to stuff like that, as there were a few kids (I’d guess 8 years old?) and they had no problems with this task.

Boston Chocolate Making Class-14

One of the 3 dozen tuffles I made.

This baby is hanging out in some powdered sugar. It’s important to coat the ganache after you rolled the balls out so that they don’t stick to each other. Either you coat them in a topping like the powdered sugar or in tempered chocolate.

Boston Chocolate Making Class-15

See those lovely chocolates, those are Taryn’s. I told you her’s were so pretty. And she packaged them so beautifully too.

If you want to learn about chocolate and make some truffles of your own then I highly suggest attending their class. It was so much fun and it really opened my eyes to buying and working with chocolate. A sweet treat indeed!

I was invited by Boston Chocolate Tours to attend their Chocolate Workshop ($75) for the purposes of this recap and review. All opinions are my own.

10 years. boom.

January 2, 2015

 10 years-2

10 years.

Ten years ago today I met Price back at his apartment in Brighton after he arrived back home from New York from his Christmas and New Years visit. He gifted me a lovely garnet necklace as a Christmas gift and we made our budding romance official.

And today we celebrated our anniversary by going to lunch. We enjoyed that time together and the dim sum lunch killed it too.

We’ll be getting married this year in June but I think we’ll always still celebrate this anniversary as well. At least I hope so!

The Most Spectacular Christmas of 2014

December 27, 2014

 Christmas 2014-14

Oh man, I loved Christmas this year. It was THE BEST.

Christmas 2014-1 Christmas 2014-2

Truthfully, looking back at it, I wasn’t too enthusiastic about last Christmas. Sure, it was Autumn’s first Christmas and that’s exciting but I was still in that new baby fog. The fog that means you live in your pajamas and your showers are limited. Christmas just felt so built up for nothing then. But this year was awesome. We all loved every bit of it

Christmas 2014-4

Christmas 2014-5

Hey guys, I’m ready!!

Christmas 2014-3 Christmas 2014-18

I got to open the first gift! Price gave me an oven thermometer as I do so much cooking and baking. Having an accurate oven temperature is vital! As I was making my version of The Pioneer Woman’s cinnamon rolls, I just needed to open it to use asap!

Of course the cinnamon rolls were awesome. We enjoyed them throughout the day. As well as our neighbor and her visiting family, and Autumn’s daycare providers as I called them up and asked them if they wanted some. Gotta share when the recipe makes 48 cinnamon rolls!

Christmas 2014-6

We got Autumn the My First Anywhere Chair from Pottery Barn Kids so she can have her own special seat. She loved it. But, of course, instead of sitting on it nicely, she would sit on the armrests and I’d have a heart attack that she would fall backwards. And, if that wasn’t enough, she would push it to the sofa and use it to climb on there. Quick learner!

Christmas 2014-7

Christmas 2014-8 Christmas 2014-9

For this being the first Christmas as an active participant, she did really well with opening up the presents and checking all the new goodies out. She got this adorable peek-a-boo bear from my aunt!

The Fisher-Price Bright Beginnings Activity Walker that Price picked out was a big hit too. She quickly started to scoot it around the house with a massive smile on her face.

Christmas 2014-10

A Banana Republic wallet, some Cards Against Humanity add-on packs, Nike Hyperwarm shirt, and a new coat shell makes for a happy Pricer.

Christmas 2014-12 Christmas 2014-13

Plus, Kemper got some Christmas goodies. A new bed and some toys- that helped keep him distracted from ripping all the gift wrap into itty bitty shreds around our living room and kitchen.

Christmas 2014-11

  Christmas 2014-15 Christmas 2014-16

She was so helpful with my presents as well. I was a very lucky girl and got not one, but two(!) Kate Spade wallets to replace the one that Kemper ate. Price wanted to make sure I had some options to match my different bags. ha! Plus, a coat (that I received earlier that month) and a mani pedi certificate. Spoiled. xo

Christmas 2014-17

Ah, one day I’ll get to give her some real pigtails. Also, I happened to put this on backwards. ha! She looks like a cabbage patch doll wearing it. Totes adorable.

After the gift exchange we went along with our typical weekend day with a morning nap, bottle, lunch, nap, etc. The weather was awesome so I took Kemper out for a walk with Autumn in baby hiking backpack.

Christmas 2014-19

Autumn had her first candy cane as well.

There might have been a back-arching breath-holding meltdown when I confiscated it when she was a sticky mess. ooph!

Christmas 2014-20

This Christmas was awesome and I know that next year will be even better as Autumn begins to understand it more and more. I’m already looking forward to next year.

Grampa Rice

December 19, 2014

Grampa Rice-4

We were so lucky that Autumn was able to met her great grampa this past summer.

She happily sat on his lap as he cradled her with his massive hands. It was so great to see Autumn with Price and his mom Elaine and her father all together. Four Generations.

Grampa Rice-2 Grampa Rice-3

Sadly he passed away just a few weeks ago at the age of 94.

Price went to the memorial in Maine today and is having some family time this weekend.

Grampa Rice-6

Marshall L. Rice Sr. lived a long and happy life. He did a variety of jobs from being a solider to a business man to a lobster man.  He lived all over from Massachusetts to New York to Hawaii to Maine. He was even at the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He loved Sunshine, Maine so much that he even opened a campground so that others could enjoy its beauty as well. He will be greatly missed by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the others who’s lives he touched.

Grampa Rice-1 Grampa Rice-5

Although Autumn won’t remember getting to meet her great grampa, we can show her these sweet pictures and tell her all about him.

We would see Marshall whenever Price and I visited his mom’s summer house in Maine. He would come over from his house down the road to have coffee and crossword puzzles with Elaine at the kitchen table or the table in the dining room. It was always so lovely to hear his deep voice discussing answers with Elaine as she read the clues out loud. His weathered, yet gentle, large hands gently held on to a floral teacup of coffee. In between the crossword puzzle answers he would talk about the current events on the island or about his past. It was always so nice to soak in those relaxed mornings.

Grampa Rice-7

“It was a great trip, and I enjoyed every day of it. Goodbye to you all.”

xoxo

Happy Father’s Day!!!

June 15, 2014

Father's Day 2014-1

Well, today is Price’s first Father’s Day.

Last year we announced that I was pregnant on Father’s Day with this cute photo.

Oh, what an amazing year it has been!

Today Autumn had swim class and Pricer took her in the water this time. Pricer had a killer crippling headache so I let him rest for a few hours by taking Autumn out for a long walk. Almost 2 hrs! She got more fresh air later as well when we all went for a walk after a steak dinner. Such a nice day.

I hope all the rest of the dads out there had a lovely day as well.

4 Generations

4 Generations

This past weekend Autumn and I went down to Florida to visit my mom and grandmother.

It was quite a momentous trip as it was Autumn’s first flight (and I did it solo as Price was studying for his Monday morning LEED test- which he PASSED!!!), my first time visiting my mom’s house since they moved last spring, and my grandmother’s first time getting to meet Autumn.

Thankfully Autumn was great on both flights and the trip was wonderful. I was sick for part of it but it was still so great to enjoy time with family.

My mom’s friend snapped these photos on Sunday morning after church.
