Monday Munchies: Dinner at Back Bay Social Club with Cisco Brewer’s

May 19, 2014

As part of my Monday Munchies series, I will feature a different eatery for a review on the first and third Monday of every month. Hope you enjoy!

BBSC and Cisco Brewery dinner-1

A few weeks ago I attending an incredible dinner at Back Bay Social Club. They host specialty dinners where the chefs base the 4-course menus on the drinks that are being served that night. I was lucky enough to be invited to attend one of these delightful events.

For this night the dinner was paired with the beers from Cisco Brewer’s. Cisco Brewer’s, a local brewery based on Nantucket, is a triple threat brewery that makes beer, wine, and spirits. I had never had their products so I was looking forward to trying the beers out. As well, as seeing what the chef at BBSC would make to pair with each beverage.

BBSC and Cisco Brewery dinner-2 BBSC and Cisco Brewery dinner-3

After some shopping at the near by mall, I headed to BBSC and down I went into the lower bar level for the dinner party. People were milling about and chatting while enjoying cans of Sankaty Light Lager. Servers were passing around appetizers for use to enjoy along with the hoppy beer.

My 2 favorite appetizers were the stuffed mushrooms and the prosciutto wrapped blue cheese stuffed dates. The mushrooms were teeny tiny and poppable. I could have eaten a tray of these babies. The stuffed dates were perfectly paired with the Sankaty Light Lager. The date was sweet and salty and just so happened to sync up nicely with the refreshing beer. It was a light beer so it would be perfect to enjoy on hot summer nights. Just pop a top and sip.

As well, I now can say that I have had bone marrow butter. It was super rich but really interesting. The bone marrow butter was served on toast points with some wilted ramps. I feel that trying it that one time is enough for me because of how rich it was but I’m glad I decided to try something new.

After the passed appetizers, we were then seated at 2 long clusters of tables for our dinner to being. During the dinner both the representatives from Cisco and BBSC spoke about the beers and food while explaining how they were paired.

BBSC and Cisco Brewery dinner-4

To my delight a plate was lowered in front of me that contained a large Day Boat Scallop that was sitting in a shell along with with Chilled Cucumber Coulis, Black Pepper Seared Halloumi Cheese and a garnish of mint. This was almost too beautiful to eat. Almost.

The scallop was paired with Cisco’s Grey Lady Ale. This was my favorite beer of the night. It is named after the nickname for the foggy island where the beer is made. I enjoyed the flavors from the fresh fruit and spices that the beer is made with.

BBSC and Cisco Brewery dinner-7 BBSC and Cisco Brewery dinner-5

The Main Course was a Potato Wrapped Grouper that was served with a Pineapple Burre Blanc and some sautéed Root Spinach. This was paired with a large glass of Madaquet IPA.

BBSC and Cisco Brewery dinner-6

The fish wash light and flaky. It was cooked perfectly in its potato wrapper. The spinach was flavorful, but a bit difficult to eat as they had long steams making for a big bite.

BBSC and Cisco Brewery dinner-8

The Fourth Course of the evening was the dessert course. Cisco’s Island Series Reserve Lager was paired with BBSC’s Peanut Butter Torte. The torte was served with a Banana Sabayon, Fried Plantains, Salted Caramel. The torte was creamy and had layers of flavor from the crumbly crust to the peanut butter filling to the caramel. The plantain provided a nice crunch to the dessert. Plus, it was just a fun flourish to the top of the slice.

BBSC and Cisco Brewery dinner-9

The lager was richer in flavor compared to the ones that we had earlier in the night. It was also the strongest beer of the evening with 6.5% abv. I’m not a big fan of heavy beers but this was a nice contrast to the sweetness in the dessert. It provided a nice overall balance.

BBSC and Cisco Brewery dinner-10

After dessert I grabbed a cab home. I stared out the window watching the rain streak across the windows as I thought about the great food and drink I just had and the great family I was heading home too. It was a wonderful night.

If the food at this speciality dinner is an indication of the quality and creativity involved in the normal menu at Back Bay Social Club I know I will be going back. I already have been eyeing their brunch menu and their signature burger. So while you can’t go back and time and enjoy this dinner with me, you can enjoy a great meal at BBSC and enjoy a cold brew from Cisco.

*While I did receive this complimentary dinner provided by Back Bay Social Club and Cisco Brewer’s, these opinions are entirely my own.

Monday Munchies: Union Square Donuts- Somerville, MA

May 5, 2014

Union Square Donuts

I love donuts.

I mean, who doesn’t?!?

Doughnuts or Donuts… I like them equally as much!

Union Square Donuts-1

And I love donuts from Union Square Donuts in Somerville, MA, a suburb just north of Boston. It’s a small shop that sells donuts and fresh brewed coffee. I don’t think things need to be more complicated than that.

Union Square Donuts-2 Union Square Donuts-3

They are famous for creating large flavorful, soft, airy, and unique donuts. They were even included in Thillist’s list of 21 Best Donut Shops in America that came out just last month. Their yeast and cake donuts are equally as good as their sweet and savory donuts, which will set you back $3 for regular ones and $3.50 for the premium ones.

I mean just check these babies out!

Union Square Donuts-4

Mouth watering!!!

Union Square Donuts-5 Union Square Donuts-6

Maple Bacon

This is a must get donut here. This is a great combination of salty and sweet. The maple glaze is offset with the cripsy, crunchy bacon. It can be a bit messy to eat but I won’t tell if you lean over the sink and eat it. Or if you hold your plate up to your face and then lick it later. I swear I won’t tell. ($3.50)

Union Square Donuts-7

Sea-Salted Bourbon Caramel

This is my favorite donut. It’s massive and intensely flavorful. The donut itself is very light as it’s dough is full if airy pockets. The caramel glaze is sweet and the bourbon in there adds a lot of flavor. But the sweetness is also balanced with the sea-salt. Be careful, it’s really sticky, but I don’t think that is a bad thing, just give your fingers a good lick once your done! ($3.00)

Union Square Donuts-8

Bacon Cheddar Sage

They have savory donuts! Both are crazy good but I love the Bacon Cheddar Sage. I love the bacon and the cheddar combo but the herby flavor from the sage is so good.($3.50)

Union Square Donuts-11 Union Square Donuts-12

Boston Cream

I’ve lived in Boston for over 10 years and have never had Boston Cream Pie from Omini Parker House, which is directly across from my office. FOR SHAME! But that doesn’t mean I don’t know a good Boston Creme Pie Donut when I devoure it. This crispy ried donut is jam packed full of a vanilla bean cream and then topped off it a velvety chocolate glaze. The vanilla cream is packed full of vanilla bean caviar so the vanilla flavor shines through against the chocolate. Yum! ($3.50)

Union Square Donuts-9 Union Square Donuts-10

Brioche Cinnamon Roll

This was the first time they were serving these guys. I just happened to be there when they brought out the first tray. I have to admit it felt a little special to be there to get to try one of the first ones ever sold.

Price commented on how this reminded him of Baklava because of the cinnamon and honey combination of flavors. The honey glaze is super sweet but really enjoyable as it’s sweetness is slightly cut back from the cinnamon that is swirled through the bun. ($5.00)

Union Square Donuts-14

I mean… come on! I can’t even get over how good everything is here!! Besides the ones showcased above, hey have flavors like Brown Butter Hazelnut Crunch, Vanilla Bean, Birthday Cake with Sprinkles, and Strawberry.

I have a love affair with the donuts at Union Square Donuts. I just can’t resist. And yet I don’t think Price minds when I give in and come home with a big box of donuts. ha!

Union Square Donuts-13

I at least try to plan ahead by getting there soon after they open since they have been known to sell out in as little as 90 minutes. And missing out on getting one of these donuts would make me sad.  They are only opened Thursday & Friday from 7 AM – 1 PM and on Saturday & Sunday: 8 AM – 3 PM. Even if you are just half awake after a night of drinking just stumble over there for a donut and coffee to perk yourself up!

Monday Munchies: Barrington Brewery & Restaurant- Great Barrington, MA

April 7, 2014

Barrington Brewery_MM-1

A few weekends ago Price and I went to the Berkshires to check out a wedding venue. I had found Crissey Farm on Budget Savvy Bride when I was doing some searching around for venue options around New England so we wanted to check it out in person so finally get some wedding planning underway.

One of the reasons we really liked Crissey Farm was that it is attached to Barrington Brewery. The space for the wedding was wonderful with it being a new green facility that had beautiful high ceilings and 2 fireplaces. But it’s proximity to things like hotels/B&B’s, touristy things, and restaurants also helped out with its appeal. In fact, the Brewery is attached and the beers they serve at Crissey Farm are from the Brewery.

Barrington Brewery_MM-2 Barrington Brewery_MM-3

After we met with Crissey Farm’s owner, Gary, we went right next door to eat lunch at the solar powered brewery. They brew a variety of beers that change with the season.

Barrington Brewery_MM-5 Barrington Brewery_MM-6

Price first enjoyed the Berkshire Blond and then the Raspberry beer. They were both light body beers (10 oz. – $3.75, pint – $5, pitcher – $19) that were really refreshing. I had a sip of each and really liked them both.

Not sure which of the beers you would like to have? Try the Brewer’s Taste ($5) which gives you 5 3oz tastes of their beers.

Barrington Brewery_MM-4

If you find a beer that you enjoy you can take home beer in 22 oz bottles ($3.50 each/4 for $1), 64 oz refillable Growlers ($5 for growler, $9 to fill) or in a variety of sizes of kegs (5 gal. keg for $60, 1/4 keg for $80, 1/2 keg for $140 + $50 deposit per keg).

Barrington Brewery_MM-7 Barrington Brewery_MM-8

In addition to the great beers they make on site they had plenty to offer on their menu. They offer a great selection of appetizers, salads, and sandwiches.

Barrington Brewery_MM-9

We started with Jackets ($6). I had never heard of Jackets before but the best way to describe them is soft Potato Skins. They are large Idaho baked potato wedges served with butter & sour cream. Then you can select from the following toppings: grated cheddar, crumbled bacon, steamed broccoli, chili ($1 each).

We ordered our Jackets with the cheddar and steamed broccoli. Such a good combo! Plus it came with the butter, which we skipped, and the sour cream. The potato wedges are soft but hold up well to the toppings.

Barrington Brewery_MM-10

I ordered the Brewer’s Pocket ($9.75). The pita bread sandwich is packed full of spinach, smoked turkey, bacon, sprouts, onion, house-made blue cheese dressing, melted Swiss.

The pita is packed full! Once I cut it in half I was able to enjoy the flavorful sandwich. The combination of the turkey, cheese, veggies, and dressing make it a real winner. This sandwich is still on my mind because of the combination of textures and how the flavors were so intense.

Barrington Brewery_MM-11

I found the pita a bit hard to eat because the cheese was on the outside. But I totally understood the construction of the sandwich as it was melted on it and it would have been weird for the cheese to be inside as the rest of the ingredients would have gotten too hot and weird… umm sprouts… no! Once I got over the messiness and the grabbed an extra napkin I dove in.

I ordered the cole slaw as my side and that was really good as well. The veggies were crisp and crunchy holding up nicely to the flavorful dressing.

Barrington Brewery_MM-12

Price enjoyed the very much loaded Steak & Stout sandwich ($12.50) The open faced sandwich started with a slice of garlic bread which was loaded high with sliced sirloin, sauteed onions, mushrooms, and gravy. Both the marinade and the gravy contain stout the brew on site.

Price though the steak was seasoned well and and cooked nicely. He really liked how everything was really flavorful from the garlic bread to the gravy. As well it didn’t hurt that it was a hearty portion that left him stuffed!

Barrington Brewery_MM-13

He also really liked the salad that was served with it as it had their house made blue cheese dressing. The majority of their dressings are made in house and, of course, feature beer!

We really wanted to try their signature Chocolate Stout Cake. It was featured in Bon Appetit’s 50th anniversary issue. It looked divine but we were stuffed!!

We really enjoyed our lunch and look forward to when we go back as we further plan wedding things!

Barrington Brewery_MM-14 Barrington Brewery_MM-15

The bathrooms are teeny tiny but were clean. There were no changing tables in there so we changed Autumn in the back seat of the car. I’m not saying there should be changing table there, only noting it. While it was a brewery there were a lot of families there- so it’s not like we are ‘those people’ bringing a baby into a bar.

There is plenty of parking in the complex so be sure to swing by when you are in the area for a great beer, meal, and some shopping.

Monday Munchies: Fajitas and ‘Ritas- Boston, MA

March 17, 2014

Fajitas And Ritas-1

Fajitas and ‘Ritas has been serving Boston with fun Tex-Mex food since 1989. Enjoy Texas favorites from Nachos to Tequila Wings, Fajitas to Barbecue, and Chili to Burritos. That’s 25 years of amazing lunches and dinners serving up some delisious food and drinks!

Price had worked near Fajitas and ‘Ritas years ago so we would occasionally meet there for lunches or drinks after work. It was a great place for affordable meals and drinks to help you get though the rest of a rough day.

It had been ages since we went but going back for lunch recently brought back the memories of the great food and margaritas we enjoyed together and with friends among the mural covered walls.

Fajitas And Ritas-2

During our recent visit, we had planned on starting with the Build Your Own Nachos. Basically, you start with a plate of tortilla chips with melted cheese ($3.74) and then you pick the toppings you would like. I like that you can make the nachos exactly how you enjoy them with steak ($3.74) or chicken ($2.15) or chili ($1.64) and topped off with things like sour cream ($.75) or jalapenos ($47). Nachos were on my mind but since a basket of warm tortilla chips with salsa were put in front of us the moment we were seated we decided to enjoy those and pick other starters when we ordered our drinks.

Fajitas And Ritas-3

I ordered the Mexican Sunrise ($6.07). I wanted something fun and it sounded like a great pick with it’s Lunazul Reposado, Grenadine, lemonade, orange juice, fresh lime juice, and ginger ale. It had great bite from the tequila and the lemonade and was such a pretty color from the Grenadine. I liked the slight effervescence from the ginger ale as well.

Fajitas And Ritas-4

Price enjoyed the house margarita ($5.37). Fresh citrus and a hearty amount of tequila always makes for a great drink. Plus, the affordable price doesn’t hurt.

Fajitas And Ritas-5

Ultimately, we decided on starting with the small order of 8 tequila wings ($8.18). Price loves wings so this was his pick. He was excited to dig right in when they were set down in front of us and the scent of the wings rose up with the steam coming off the hot wings.

Fajitas And Ritas-6

The tequila wings were juicy and really flavorful without being too hot. The tequila adds a really nice flavor. I would have preferred the skin to be crisper but I’m honestly really picky about wings since I don’t actually really like wings. shhh… I prefer tenders but I have to say I did have one of these and it was really good. Loved the flavor from the sauce.

The wings were served with a zesty blue cheese sauce and, of course, celery. I loved the blue cheese sauce as it was really creamy and flavorful. I couldn’t resist dipping some tortilla chips into the sauce as well.

Fajitas And Ritas-7

I picked out the special of Jalapeno Poppers since they are some of my favorite appetizers. I love the combo of spicy pepper with cooling cream cheese and the crunch from the crisp coating. These poppers were a perfect combo of that. Plus crazy fresh from the fryer, which is a must with poppers as you want a hot filling and crisp coating.

Fajitas And Ritas-8

The jalapeno poppers were served with the same zesty blue cheese sauce as the wings.

Fajitas And Ritas-9 Fajitas And Ritas-10

Fajitas and ‘Ritas has several zones in their restaurant. It makes for flexible seating when it comes to avoiding loud crowds or for hosting a party in an area.

Fajitas And Ritas-11

For my entrée, I ordered the steak and shrimp fajitas ($10.28) because I couldn’t pass up the signature dish in which the restaurant is named.

The fajitas are served with fresh guacamole, chopped pico de gallo, sour cream, and 2 warm flour tortillas.

Fajitas And Ritas-12 Fajitas And Ritas-13

I loved it all. It was a large portion of vegetables with steak and 4 shrimp. The steak was lean, flavorful, and tender while the shrimp had a nice blackening to it from the heat of the cooktop. The steak was cut into strips so it was easy for stacking into the tortillas.

Because we enjoyed 2 starters, I saved half of my fajitas to have for lunch the next day. It heated up well in the microwave as the veggies were still a bit crisp and the steak was not too well done in the first place so it didn’t get tough and chewy after it was reheated.

Fajitas And Ritas-14

Price picked the pulled pork platter ($9.35). The platters are served with a corn muffin, cole slaw, beans, and a side of BBQ sauce. The typical hearty Texas meal!

Fajitas And Ritas-15

Price really enjoyed the 12 hour smoked pork that was smothered in BBQ sauce. The thick sauce was smokey and sweet and a great compliment to the beans. A bite of pulled pork followed up with a bite of corn muffin was a great combination.

We both really enjoyed the cole slaw as it was really crunchy and lightly dressed. For us, texture is a big factor in a good cole slaw and this style of cut (like a dice, not ribboned) makes it extra crunchy.

Fajitas And Ritas-16

While Price was enjoying his entrée, he had a CoronaRita ($8.41). What’s a CoronaRita? Well, it’s their house frozen margarita served with an upside down 7oz bottle of Corona in it. As you drink the margarita you pull the Corona out of the drink to release more of the beer so it mixes with the ‘rita. yum!

Besides the margaritas, they also serve wine and margarita like drinks with a vodka base instead of tequila. The Texas Sipper ($6.54) made with Titos Handmade Vodka, St. Germain, Grapefruit Juice, soda has my name all over it for next time.

I had been hoping to enjoy some dessert but we had filled up too much on our meal. Only means we need to go back for some Sopapillas (One for $1.64, Three for $4.40) and, of course, more ‘ritas!

Fajitas And Ritas-17

And a big THANK YOU to our waitress who gave us awesome service, as well as being super sweet to Autumn. Just the sweetest thing ever!!!!!! Love the extra attention for our little one. Made my day.

Monday Munchies: Brunch at Local 149- Boston, MA

March 3, 2014

As part of my Monday Munchies series, I will feature a different eatery for a review on the first and third Monday of every month. Hope you enjoy!

____________________

Local 149_01

Oh man, I love going to Local 149.

I love the food. I love the drinks. I love the decor.

I’ve gone for work outings. I’ve gone for birthday celebrations. I’ve enjoyed dinner and drinks. And for brunch and drinks. Ah, drinks. 🙂

I had been thinking about going to Local 149 for the past month. I was craving a good brunch and had been thinking of Local 149 since I had gone there back in October with my mom when she surprised me when we came up from Florida for my baby shower.

Local 149_02

On this recent brunch outing Price and I enjoyed some Bloody Mary’s. The Bloody Mary ($10) has a homemade horseradish tomato juice base. They came garnished with an olive, a slice of pepperoni, and a peppadew pepper. Their Bloody Mary is really good but I like mine with more lemon juice- just my personal preference.

I am looking forward to the next time I go and trying the Irish Breakfast ($10). The Irish whiskey, cereal milk, amaretto, and cold-brewed coffee sounds irresistable. I just love whiskey and amaretto. And combined… sign me up!

Local 149_03

I had suggested that we kick off brunch with the Mac and Cheese Fritters ($7) but Price suggested the Crispy Beignet Bag ($7). Being so close to Mardi Gras I was sold on the idea of some beignets!

Local 149_04

These are not like the beignets we had at Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans. Those were big pillowy beignets, but these were little beignet nuggets. Very different than what we were expecting but still very good!

As soon as these little beignet nuggest are out of the fryer they were tossed into a bag with a cinnamon and sugar mixture. Then to take thing to the next level, they were given a generous sprinkling of powdered sugar before being served to you. So yummy.

Local 149_05

Price had an order of the Chicken and Waffles ($17). A huge crisp sweet waffle made for a great pedestal for some crispy, crunchy fried chicken. The chicken breast, thigh, and drumstick were all very juicy and tender. But what tops it off is that the Chicken and Waffles are served with warm maple syrup, a warm nutmeg butter, and apricot jam. The nutmeg added a bit of spice to the butter.

The best way to eat this is to cut a piece of syrup drenched waffle, then put a bit of butter and jam on the waffle. Okay, got that? Then you rip off a piece of chicken and stab your fork through the chicken and waffle and take a big bite. Enjoy!

Local 149_06

Now the thing that I had been craving was the Texas in Southie ($12). It all starts with a slice of buttery texas toast that is surrounded with a generous portion of corned beef hash, that is packed full with seasoned homefries. All of that is then topped off with a fried egg and hollandaise sauce. Glorious.

The dish comes with a sunny side up egg but I prefer mine over-easy so I requested that instead. The egg was so runny, soo sunshine yellow happy. Mixing together the runny yolk with Hollandaise and then scooping up some hash and swooping it through the sauce is such a perfect bite. Try it, trust me.

Local 149_07

Now that was an awesome brunch!

Be sure to arrive right after Local 149 opens at 11 if you don’t have a reservation, or just be flexible to wait. And just maybe, you can try to snag one of the tables by the fireplace! I’d totally request that when making a reservation.

Monday Munchies: The Fat Cactus- Lynnfield, MA

February 17, 2014

The Fat Cactus

I swear I could eat Mexican food twice a week and never get bored of it. It’s just a cuisine that is so flavorful and delicious. I can’t resist the opportunity to have it. And we had been recently been talking about going out to dinner so I just knew we had to try a place that we always say ‘oh we should go there!’ every time we drive by. So we headed to The Fat Cactus- A Mexicali Cantina for a great dinner.

The Fat Cactus-1 The Fat Cactus-2

The Fat Cactus is located on Rt 1 in Lynnfield, MA

The Fat Cactus-3

Price enjoyed both a frozen Fat Cactus Margy and a Fat Cactus Margy on the Rocks ($6.59). The Fat Cactus is their classic margarita consisting of Tequila, triple sec, sour mix, and fresh lime juice. He said that both were good but he preferred the one on the rocks much more.

The Fat Cactus-4

I had the Prickly Pear Margy, which is their #1 best selling special ($9.95). I thought it had a great boozy kick to it as it was pretty sweet from the prickly pear juice. Because the margarita had orange juice instead of lime juice I decided to get it with sugar on the rim as I thought the sweetness would be a perfect pair. I would definitely order this margarita again.

We started with some complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were crisp and salty, which went well with the salsa that came with a kick. Typically restaurant salsa is pretty plain and mild but this was good with some bite.

The Fat Cactus-5

The Baja Spicy Popcorn Shrimp ($8.99) sounded like a great appetizer so we ordered that. It was a great alternative to the calamari that we typically order. The shrimp were small and the perfect poppable appetizer. The shrimp’s light coating was lightly fried to a toasty brown color. The shrimp were flavorful on their own but even better when dipped into the Baja dipping sauce. The dipping sauce was creamy and really quite spicy amping up the flavor of the shrimp even more. I dipped some chips in the sauce as well since I enjoyed it so much.

The Fat Cactus-6

For dinner I ordered the Tacos AL Pastore ($9.99). The pair of pork tacos came with a choice of rice, refried beans, or black beans. I selected therice, which was seasoned nicely and loaded with vegetables as well. The portion was rather large, and I was looking forward to dessert, so I only had 1 taco and some rice but that taco was so dang good. The pork was dang tender and flavorful. The rotisserie pork was marinated with pineapple and red Chilies, and then topped off with fresh onions, cilantro, and the same Baja sauce that was served with the Baja Spicy Popcorn Shrimp. So many layers of flavor!

The Fat Cactus-7

Price had a Chimichanga filled with Carne Deshebrada ($12.99). Carne Deshebrada is  marinated, slow-cooked moist shredded beef. It was a perfect filling for the chimichanga, which basically is a deep fried burrito, which is then covered in queso. umm… yum! Again, the portions were generous, as the chimichanga was served with rice and a choice of refried beans or black beans, so Price saved half of his to make room for dessert as well.

The Fat Cactus-8

We shared the Deep Fried Ice Cream dessert ($5.99). A softball sized ball of ice cream was plated before us. We dug into the ice cream which is rolled in cinnamon and sugar and then coated with crusted cornflakes. And if that wasn’t enough it was topped off with chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and a cherry! It was really good but it honestly would have been a bit better if it was softer as it was rock hard, but I suppose it’s tricky frying ice cream.

The Fat Cactus-9 The Fat Cactus-10

We are already looking forward to our next visit to The Fat Cactus. They have great deals during the wee, like on Monday any Burrito or Chimichanga is just $5! As well they post specials on their Facebook page.

Monday Munchies: Morada Bay Beach Cafe- Islamorada, FL

January 21, 2014

As part of my Monday Munchies series, I will feature a different eatery for a review on the first and third Monday of every month. Hope you enjoy!

____________________

Morada Bay Beach Cafe-1

For Price’s birthday this year we were in The Florida Keys on our Babymoon so we had great dining options right at our finger tips. We ended up dining right on the beach watching the sunset when we discovered Morada Bay Beach Cafe on Islamorada.

Morada Bay Beach Cafe-3 Morada Bay Beach Cafe-2

Dinner on the beach right at sunset… perfection.

We started the birthday dinner off with some drinks and appetizers. Fresh drinks and fresh seafood to kick things off.

Morada Bay Beach Cafe-4 Morada Bay Beach Cafe-5

Price enjoyed a margarita while I enjoyed a kids smoothie. That’s just what happens when you’re pregnant! Ha! The margarita was large and in charge as it was served in big ball jar. It could have used some extra tequila though!

While we sipped out drinks we just took in the gorgeous view.

Morada Bay Beach Cafe-6

We shared the Conch Salad which was made up of fresh bell peppers, red onion, jalapenos, tomatoes, and a citrus juice sauce. ($13) I had not had conch in years! It was so good. The conch was fresh and perfectly ‘cooked’ from the citrus juices. Tender conch was mixed with thinly sliced vegetables that had a lovely contrasting crunch. The salad was served with come crackers but I don’t think they were needed.

Morada Bay Beach Cafe-7

As well we enjoyed the Ahi Tuna Tartar appetizer. ($18.50) The marinated tuna was served on top of some pureed avocado and served with pickled ginger, wasabi, and a sesame soy vinaigrette. The diced tuna was mixed together with some cucumber and jalapeno providing a nice textural contrast as well as flavor contrast.

Morada Bay Beach Cafe-9

After we enjoyed the appetizers we shared, we had our entrees. Price decided to order the Pasta of the Day ($24). The chef’s special that day consisted of spaghetti served with large shrimp, spinach, and tomatoes in a light sauce.  He really enjoyed the pasta mixed with the fresh vegetables and the perfectly cooked shrimp. There were plenty of shrimp on the generous portion as well.

Morada Bay Beach Cafe-8

I was in the mood for some steak so I jumped at ordering the steak special. The steak entree was served with 3 delicious sides- a mixed greens salad, plantains, and a coconut cous cous. All of those were a nice accompaniment to the steak. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium- rare, and was nicely presented on the dish. Almost too pretty to eat… almost.

We finished the night off with some Key Lime Pie. We unfortunately did not photograph this delightful dessert but the sun had set upon us. A great way to finish an evening out with sand between our toes while we shared some silky smooth Key Lime Pie.

The one disappointing thing about the Beach Cafe were the condition of the bathrooms. The bathrooms are in a building off to the side of the performance stage. They just seemed like they needed some attention in terms of getting an updated design with new finishes. As well, the bathrooms were in need to some attention to clean them up. There were rolls of toilet paper on the floor. Maybe someone had just come in and made a mess prior to the staff going in but it was disappointing to see.

Sausage and Gravy Eggs Benedict @ The Stuffed Pig, Marathon FL

January 12, 2014

 the stuffed pig_eggs benedict_03

When Price and I were on our Babymoon in the Florida Keys we found a place called The Stuffed Pig and absolutely fell in love with it for breakfast. In the 4 mornings that we were there we ate there twice. So yeah, we loved it!

The Stuffed Pig is a fun open air restaurant that features down-home fresh cooking. It’s a simple place with plastic chair with a gravel ‘flooring’. Pick up a laminated menu or check out the specials on the chalkboard to select some damn good breakfast or lunch. And be sure to say hi to the cats that roam around the property.

Shrimp & Grits

Grilled shrimp w/Bacon & Cheddar on Grits, 2 Eggs, Toast  $12.00

On the first morning we went there I got the Shrimp and Grits. So much food!! I skipped the toast and just dove right into the rest. I took the time to take the shrimp off the skewers and then took the tails off so I could get a shrimp with every bite of cheesy grits and eggs.

the stuffed pig_cat_02 the stuffed pig_cat_01

I made a friend on the first day. Tigger the cat was very friendly so she rubbed up all against the belly bump and kneaded the napkins I had on my lap. Then sat on my lap while I ate, I think she was hoping I’d share some shrimp!

the stuffed pig_big breakfast

Price also enjoyed one of the breakfast specials that had a pancake, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and toast. Basically, a half portion of their World Famous Pig’s Breakast.

As well, they have $2 mimosas and $3 Bloody Mary’s!!! I was so jealous of Price as he enjoyed them with his breakfasts. I figure it is just another reason for us to go back- when I’m not pregnant- to enjoy their great food and very, very affordable drinks!

Sausage and Gravy Eggs Benedict

Of course when I saw they had a Sausage and Gravy Eggs Benedict on the special’s menu I had to get it.

It’s a great combo of 2 great breakfast plates. It was a change up for me since I love Hollandaise sauce so it was a big departure for me not to have that when having Eggs Benedict. But I embraced the change and really enjoyed the special.

As well, instead of the typical English Muffins the Eggs Benedict was set upon freshly made biscuits. They biscuits were really tender and soft. They became a great sponge to soak up the sausage gravy and runny egg yolks. Then a sausage patty was set upon each biscuit to make this super sausage-y. That’s right double sausage!!

The side of homefries were great as they were well seasoned with the onions they were cooked with and from some of the char they had from the griddle. It was really good to mix them into the sausage gravy.

Monday Munchies: Hungry Tarpon Restaurant – Islamorada, FL

January 6, 2014

As part of my Monday Munchies series, I will feature a different eatery for a review on the first and third Monday of every month. Hope you enjoy!

Hungry Tarpon-01

When Price and I were in The Florida Keys back in September for our last getaway before our baby’s arrival, we enjoyed some really amazing meals. We ate all over The Keys including pool side, stands on the street, and right on the beach for some fine dining.  Each experience enjoyable for their own reasons: the views, price, offerings, and music.

On our last day in The Keys we stopped off for breakfast at Hungry Tarpon Restaurant on Islamorada while we were on our way back from Duck Key to the airport in Ft. Lauderdale. We planned to eat at the Hungry Tarpon since we were going to Robbie’s of Islamorada to feed the tarpons there and the Hungry Tarpon is right there, literally. A great 2 for 1 stop!

The Hungry Tarpon Restaurant serves generous portions at affordable prices. And best of all the food is fresh, homemade, and hearty.

Hungry Tarpon-03

Hungry Tarpon

Hash browns topped with 2 eggs, shredded jack cheese, a homemade biscuit, and sausage gravy $7.50

I was stunned when this plate was put down in front of me. It was such a huge plate of food. And such good food too! My hash browns were topped off with 2 over-easy eggs, plenty of cheese, and then the sausage gravy.

The sausage gravy was sooo good (but a bit salty which was the only complaint of the entire place).  The sausage is evenly crumbled and mixed into the smooth, creamy gravy.

Hungry Tarpon-05

Hungry Permit

Hash browns topped with American cheese, fresh tomatoes, 2 eggs, bacon, a homemade biscuit, and sausage gravy $7.95

Price really enjoyed his breakfast as well. Sadly, it conquered him and he tapped out at half the plate as well. Maybe it was a portion size? or maybe it was the double meat… bacon and sausage gravy? ha!

Our plates were very similar, besides being different style of eggs, so we didn’t share this time, like normal. But I think that the next time we’re in The Keys (can we pack our bags now?!?!) I’d get the Hungry Tarpon with tomatoes. The tomatoes make it healthy, right?

Hungry Tarpon-04

The best thing about both of our plates were the biscuits. We were both so impressed with the flavor and texture of the biscuits. The tender biscuits were so buttery. They were so light and fluffy and had a nice crumb to them under the crisp top.  The biscuits came with some butter but I think it doesn’t even need it they are so good just on their own.

If you are passing by in The Keys then I highly suggest that you stop by Robbie’s to feed the tarpons and have a great meal at the Hungry Tarpon. It will be a great time and you’ll enjoy fresh homemade food. And maybe you just might need a nap afterwards. I’m sure you can find a local beach to relax on 🙂

Tip Tap Benedict @ The Tip Tap Room, Boston MA

October 1, 2013

Tip Tap Room_brunch

For one of our monthly date days I took Pricer out to brunch at The Tip Tap Room here in Boston for their Tipsy Brunch. We have loved Chef/owner Brian Poe since we met him years ago when he became the head chef of The Rattlesnake Bar and Grill. I knew that brunch would be a hit here because of how awesome everything from the The Rattlesnake, and here at the Tip Tap Room, has been over the past few years.

Tip Tap Room_Bloody Mary

Tip Tap Bloody Mary

our spicy homemade Bloody Mary with a candied bacon rim. $10.00

Obviously, brunch = Bloody Mary’s. While I love a mimosa, I can thow together some oj and champange/ perseco myself so I go I will order a Bloody Mary 9x out of 10. I’m always just so interested in how everyone makes their Bloody Mary base mix and how they finish off the glass with garnish. And this candied bacon rim was a winner. Sometimes I struggle with a bacon rim because it will be super smoked and I think that can just be too intense for the spicy sharp flavors of the Bloody Mary. So this slightly sweet bacon rim was really enjoyable.

Tip Tap Room_Muffins and Stuff

Muffins and Stuff

Chef Poe’s blend of fresh breads with breakfast caramel butter $6.00

We started with the Muffins and Stuff to see what kind of fresh breads they offered. The chocolate bread was to die for. To-die-for. everything was incredible really with the moist breast, toasted English Muffins, and crunchy pastries. Plus, there was a caramel infused butter served along side of the bread basket. I wanted to sneak this ramekin into my purse. It was heavenly with its soft consistency and a sweet flavor that had toasty notes that went really well with the sweeter breads.

Tip Tap Room_Corned Beef Hash_01

Corned Beef Hash

Topped with a poached egg $11.00

Price ordered the Corned Beef Hash entrée. It honestly surprised me because 1) he doesn’t covet Hollandaise like I do and 2) he doesn’t love runny eggs. So I had guessed he would pick something like the Belgian Beer Waffles or the Steak & Egg entrees.

So when he picked the Corned Beef, and loved it, I was really shocked. But he really enjoyed combining the in homemade shaved corned beef with the home fries and scooping up a bite of the Hollandaise sauce covered egg. It was that really balanced bite that he really enjoyed. The runny egg yolk was not too intense for him because it was mixed together with the Hollandaise sauce, and ultimately mixed together with the salty meat and crisp potatoes. A real play on texture and flavors.

I think that I have to give this a try next time.

Tip Tap Benedict

Butter Fried Smashed Potato Cake dusted with English Muffin Crumbs, Cured Ham, Poached Eggs, Beer Cheese Hollandaise $12.50

Of course I ordered the Eggs Benedict dish. duh.

I did consider some of the other entrée offerings, but only for a split second since I can’t resist Eggs Benedict and this once just sounded so incredible.

I was really intregeted by the Fried Smashed Potato Cake because I was wondering how it would taste and if  it would have a chunky texture. I was thinking of the post- Thanksgiving leftover creations I make up. But I discovered this was not at all like my leftover mashups. (Thankfully!) This potato cake was soo light, fluffy, and very smooth. The English Muffin crumbs on the outside were super fine and a lovely golden brown color. Oh yeah, there might have been some butter going on.

Tip Tap Room_Eggs Benedict_02

On top of the potato cake was the cured ham, which was just like Canadian Bacon, and then the egg and the dreamy Beer Cheese Hollandaise sauce. I repeat… Beer Cheese Hollandaise. Yep, can’t have a tipsy brunch without some beer in your Hollandaise sauce. Plus it was cheesy too! So it was not like any other Hollandaise I had before since I’m sured to the more traditional sauce that is pretty lemony. The play on the sauce was really interesting. It was really think, creamy and all around amazing.

Under all that Beer Cheese Hollandaise sauce were the loveliest poached eggs. I love when they don’t look that uniform, like someone cut off the edges with a scissor. Besides that they were cooked well. The yolk was super runny and there was not too much (gross) runny white surrounding it.

I wanted to lick this plate clean to get every bit of the egg yolk, Hollandaise sauce and infused oil off the plate and into my stomach. But I had some self control and managed to resist myself.

*There was no side, like home fries or a side salad, which I rate because its pairing is just as important. Also, I can’t just ignore a bad side when looking at a whole entrée. So while there was no side (knocking it 10 points from my rating) it was a hearty enough Eggs Benedict that I didn’t feel like it was lacking, especially with the big potato cakes.

Monday Munchies: Angela’s Cafe, Boston MA

August 19, 2013

As part of my Monday Munchies series, I will feature a different eatery for a review on the first and third Monday of every month. Hope you enjoy!

____________________

Angela's Cafe Boston_01

I’ve been so horrible about sharing great eateries in Monday Munchies series. It’s just that I’ve been a lazy blogger recently. Really lazy. Oh, pregnancy and summer. Double whammy. Plus, ever since we’ve found out that The Bean is on its way we have been watching our spending. Oh hey, did you know that daycare is expensive… FML.

So anyway, I’m finally back with Angela’s Cafe, an amazing Mexican restaurant in East Boston. We’ve enjoyed going to Angela’s for a few years now. It all started when I was watching a co-worker’s dog and they suggested a few places in the area in case we wanted to go out. One of which was Angela’s, which of course was a big hit.

Angela's Cafe Boston_02

This hole in the wall neighborhood joint features the best of homemade Poblano Cuisine you can get. Fresh ingredients are prepared in dishes as simple as the Flautas starter ($7) to complex entrees like the Mariscada ($22). It has been widely recognized for the true flavors they serve from being written up in the Boston Globe to being heavily awarded to being featured on Diners, Drive In’s, and Dives.

Angela's Cafe Boston_03 Angela's Cafe Boston_04

When you go you receive a complimentary basket of chips with 2 kinds of salsa. They are generous about refilling the basket so dive right in while you peruse the menu.

I suggest that you start with an order of their regular size Guacamole ($9.50), which is made to order in a molcajete. The bigger size is worth it since you won’t be able to resist it. Plus it will go quickly if you are with others.

Also suggest their Queso Fundito ($9.00) as an appetizer. It is so good. Cheesy. Spicy. Dippy. Take a bite with fresh tortillas and you won’t regret it.

Angela's Cafe Boston_05

I’ve always enjoyed everything we’ve ordered for dinner ranging from burritos ($7.95) to quesadillas ($7.95- $9.85) to Chilles Rellenos ($17).

When Price’s dad was in town we took him here as it is becoming a go to destination for us when family is visiting. It’s just hard to resist not sharing great food and amazing fresh margaritas ($9.50) with them. It wouldn’t be fair not to share this gem with them.

Price ordered the Enchiladas Salsa Rojas ($15) with chicken. The dish is either served with a red sauce or green sauce, and either way is a big hit with it’s hand rolled enchiladas. These are not the typical cheesy enchiladas you order out but a lighter version that is stuffed with your choice of shredded chicken, pork, or vegetables. The trio is topped with a duo of Mexican cheeses, sliced onions and radishes, and some wedges of fresh avocado. As well as being served along side yellow rice and beans.

Angela's Cafe Boston_06 Angela's Cafe Boston_07

I ordered chicken Mole Poblano de Angela ($17). The chicken is lean and topped with a complex sauce made of the chocolate, nuts, and a variety of chilies. The spice to the dish is subtle but the flavors are powerful. I enjoyed pieces of the chicken in pieces of warm homemade tortillas that was served along side of yellow rice and black beans.

We were so stuffed during this recent visit that we skipped dessert but I can assure you that the flan ($5.95) is amazing!! If you happen to save room then I say go for it. The caramel topped custard is rich a so creamy.

Stop by Angela’s Cafe in East Boston for some amazing Mexican food and imagine yourself slipping away while you sip on your fresh margarita!

Monday Munchies: Chefs in Shorts 2013

June 17, 2013

As part of my Monday Munchies series, I will feature a different eatery for a review on the first and third Monday of every month. Hope you enjoy!

____________________

So I’m changing this up this week and sharing with you a recap of an event instead of an established eatery. What I say goes!

Last Friday night we attended the sold out (!!) 16th annual Chefs in Shorts event. It was my first time attending the benefit that helps out Future Chefs, which helps students in the Boston area get into culinary school and ultimately into kitchens. So cool.

 Chefs In Shorts_01

As soon as I walked in I saw this little cutie hard at work helping her chef aunt prep the most amazing grilled cheese. I just love when kids are helping out and learning in the kitchen.

Chefs In Shorts_02

I could have eaten each and every one of those grilled cheeses. But I held back and only had one. Sang! So good!!

Chefs In Shorts_03

Chefs In Shorts_04

Working on some potato pancakes to serve up with chicken chili. The flavors were so good. A bit of a kick from all the spices. Plus, check out the view… that was just as awesome!

Chefs In Shorts_05

Decorate your own cupcake bar! Pick out the cake and frosting combo and then get to decorating. This would be so cute for a kids party.

Can I have a platter of these please?

Chefs In Shorts_10

This station served ribs that you could top with honey… that you scrape right off the comb. Seriously- coolest thing ever.

Chefs In Shorts_12 Chefs In Shorts_11

So much fun to see the chefs grilling up a storm.

Chefs In Shorts_13

We were stuffed (and one of us was buzzed) at the end of the night. It was so much fun to meet the different chefs and try all the fun grilled dishes that they were preparing for everyone to enjoy.

I can’t wait for next year’s event!

While I was invited to attend this event as a guest, my views and opinions are my own.
