Bacon and Beer- the perfect marriage

April 28, 2010

This past Saturday Emily and I, along with our boyfriends Peter and Price, went to the first annual Boston Bacon and Beer Festival hosted by eatBoston. The idea was genius. I admit to being more attracted to the idea of the bacon based things more than the beer. I just don’t really like beer. I know, I know, you have to try it until you find something you like. Sure but when I am at a bar up here I am not about to plunk down $5-8 on a beer I might not like so I stick with the few I know I do like or just get water. Well I figured that going to this would give me the chance to try a few beers. If I did not like I could always pass it on to Price or just toss it out.

Besides the event being cool for being about bacon and beer it was held in this really cool open air building. The vacant building  was built in 1891 as the Central Power Station for the West End Street Railway Company, the precursor to the MBTA. It was the world’s largest electrical power station at the time. Later on the building became a trolley barn. Now it is used by SOWA’s residents business owners for events, such as antique shows. The building is a mixture of The Romanesque and Gothic Revival styles.

So back to the food and drink…. There were 25 restaurants and 16 breweries. So there was a great selection of beer and bacon samples to try.  I tried a few breweries and the one that I liked the best was a beer called Brown Angel from Clown Shoes Brewing. I thought it was a nice rich dark color (so pretty!) and really refreshing. It was a beer that I could get to relax in the backyard or just drink any time. I stuck with wondering around and trying the bacon things. There were bacon caramel sauces that were served with vanilla ice cream, savory cheesecakes with bacon, beer and bacon cupcakes, and so many things that we did not even get to try. One of the most unusual was the bacon and chocolate shakes served by b.good. hands down favorite was the salad and portobello mushroom served with a bacon based dressing. This was from Henrietta’s Table, which is my favorite place in Cambridge, so I was really excited to try what they had to offer and not surprised that I loved it. There were crazy lines since the event was popular but mainly because it was not laid out well, hoping they fix that for next year.

Lastly, I got 3 things while there. 1) The bacon hot sauce we saw. That was kinda obvious since it’s a great combination of bacon and hot sauce!! The bacon flavor added a slight smokiness to the hot sauce. 2) I got a necklace from Black Sheep Designs. It was a pretty cool necklace since it had an old T token. I miss the T tokens and I know this will be a great thing to have around after we move. 3) Whenever I go out I’m on the look out for cute rabbit themed things. Well Price spotted this hilarious letterpress card from Ferdinand’s booth. He got it for us so I just need to get it framed now. Love it.

A good day

April 8, 2010

yesterday was a good day

It was gorgeous out. We set a new record! It hit 90 degrees in Boston!!!! (granted it dropped like 40 degrees overnight for today’s high) The city was alive with people riding bikes, selling their artwork on the street, eating ice cream, and walking around- overall just being outside.

Sonsie’s ‘outdoor seating’ on Newbury Street (across from the BAC)

I had a meeting at school and I’m now a level 8- the level of performance, knowledge, and responsibilities at work required to graduate. wOOt!

When I got off the T I saw the most incredible sunset. In the minute it took to cross the street and get my camera it already changed so much, but it still was such a pretty, vibrant color combination.

don’t judge the picture cuz it’s crap- the sunset was unbelievable!

Price got a rate increase for the drafting work he just started. So cool since it’s like seeing the light in the end of the tunnel in terms of getting money, paying off CC debit, and splitting bills again.

the best of the worst shots I took of us

So we sorta celebrated my final approval to graduate and his increase with a simple sushi dinner at Privus. We took a walk at night and headed down the road for something quick and cheap for dinner and ended up at Privus. Such good sushi! Price got their Crispy Dragon Roll and I got their Treasure Island Roll.

do you see the dragon?

once we got home we had a call with my mom discussing the graduation party. We picked a caterer and menu and then I went online and we picked out invites that I have to edit and order tonight.

loving how everything is wrapping up and how spring is gearing up!

You’re a Mess

March 29, 2010

On Friday night, Price and I went over our friend Jovan’s place for a Sangria party. He has been traveling across the country working on farms for this thesis. He was back briefly so he planned a party for people to catch up with him. It was great to see him and catch up. Plus enjoying some wine and sangria didn’t hurt. I got the typical flush. (Jovi is on the left in the first pic)

I woke on Saturday morning to 26 degree weather… perfect weather for a bike ride, right? The thing is that I hate the cold and I had not been on a bike since high school (like 7 years). So I figured the Yelp Elite sponsored tour through Urban Adventours would be interesting and a bit scary. Well the saying that riding a bike comes back to you is true, but it does not mean you are a pro. Yep, I fell at the very start. My foot slipped off the pedal so I spazed out, and then fell right over on my right side. Skills. I brushed off and did the rest of the ride with a sore ankle, knee, and palm but the extra pain was worth it because our 3 guides from Urban Adventours were amazing. Since I was scared of falling again and having the rest of the group run me over or fall because of me I stuck to the back so I spent the time talking to the end guide. They were so great and taught us a lot about the city. I’ve been here since Sept 2003 but still can learn so much! Like I walk by the birthplace of Benjamin Franklin every time I go to the Milk Street Post Office.

After the bike tour I met Price at the Great Masonic Lodge downtown. They were doing an open house and we heard it would be pretty cool to learn about it and get a tour. The different lodge rooms were unbelievable. We went into one and it was beautiful, the detail in the ceiling, trim, furniture- all stunning. Then off to a more stunning room. The craftsmanship was breathtaking. There was a ceiling that really left you in awe. I loved being there. Plus the tour guide said I asked good questions. Teacher’s Pet 🙂 After the tour we stuck aorund to watch this print maker. We saw his table before the tour but did not have a chance to check it out since I arrived just before a tour started. He was so cool telling us how printing making was used then, how to clean things clean, what the ink was made of, what the poweder did, etc. He even let Price use the press and take home the finished piece 🙂

Saturday afternoon became an extended lounge into nap time. Ahh can’t get enough of nap time. The title of this post is exactly what Price said to me after showing him my swollen right ankle. Plus then I started to get all flushed and had a slight fever which Price summed up casually with something like “Well, it’s probably ’cause you were rode a bike over 10 miles in below freezing temps.” Well, duh.

Sunday was Sunday… get the paper, coupons, cleaning, laundry, food shopping, angry rabbits, NASCAR was rained out. Just the day before Monday.

row row row your boat

March 16, 2010

Where to begin?

Maybe Saturday morning when the rain started?

Or Sunday when the rain kept pouring down?

Maybe at the point when I’m just waking up Monday morning  to hear Price yelling,”the apartment is flooding!!!”

Yep, that is a good starting point.

So with those words our Monday began. And what a Monday it was.

6:20– I grab my glasses, or maybe they were already on, whatever, and run out of our room to see Price at the point where the water was in our living room. I run through the water to my scrapbooking paper tote on the floor, in the water, and hoist it up to the chair (yay, saved like $200 worth of paper!). Price is running around trying to figure out what the hell is going on. There is lots of yelling, and grabbing things off the floor.

“Is it coming out the windows? Is the printer ruined?”

“No, it’s not the windows, it’s not the walls.”

“Oh my god!”

“It’s in the office”

“Is the computer okay?”

I run outside, barefoot, in the rain, to the front of the house to get our landlord. Frantic door bell ringing does not work, back in the house to get my phone to call them.

“S, sorry to wake you but the apartment is flooding.”

Back down stairs there is running around in water trying to grab things and move them to higher ground.

6:30– The water was only an inch and a half or so but the area it is effecting was pretty big- whole living room, bathroom, office, closets- and it is spreading and rising (another 1 in the deepest area). With the homeowners witnessing the destruction of their property they got to work quickly helping us move things and figuring out what to do. Mission critical- get a sump pump. Since the basement* has never, ever flooded before they did not have one. It never even crossed their minds that it would happen, otherwise they would have never put hardwood floors in there, which S tells me as she is rolling up her pants. And these are not the pop in place home depot floors, these are the professionally laid, sanded, polished floors.

7.00– Finding a sump pump in a state that has been experiencing wide spread flooding due to rain amounts 8-10 inches in 2 days is nearly impossible. Luckily, G finds one at S’s office building. we can’t find the point of origin for the water. Clearly it is coming up but from where? Most of the water is in the middle of the apartment, but there is not obvious source there- no sub floor piping access.  One of the lowest points is checked, under the tub. Yeah, lots of water there. So the sump pump is put there and the garden hose is shoved in the tub so the water has a place to drain. This poor little pump is working hard to keep things at bay, and it seems like a losing battle as we discover water coming in from the South end of the house. Shit, move the bed! Our box spring is now wet.  Ahhhh! Chaos continues, G manages to get another sump pump one held for him in Worcester- a good 45 minutes away. Plumber is called to come to see if there is anything he can do.

8: 45- Calling work to let me know I’ll be late. Duh.

until 10– Price and I are “cleaning” things up as the 1 sump pump is chugging away. I drive the 3 blocks down(it’s raining!) to the best bakery ever to get breakfast and Price a big coffee. The rabbits have been moved. They are royally pissed because this is normally their out of cage time. Jack is scared/angry and protesting by picking up the castle with his teeth and slamming it back down.

On the bright side, Monday is trash day so I start carrying out some ruined items to the curb. Our living room rug, an otoman, a decorative pillow that became a sponge. The water went into our office closet. The one with all our architectural drawing and model materials. So I’m carrying out wood, large drawing pads, graph paper, and foam core to the trash. Price is wet vac-ing up the living room. We flip out bed up to let the box spring dry.

10: 45– Plumber comes. He does something under the floor where our book cases used to be. I am too distracted to care. (I later learn that he opened up some pipe causing the water to slowly drain directly into the sewer pipe)

11.05– Walking to the train to get to work. When I was first up in the morning I was sans shoes. Price made me get my rain boots on so I would not be in the cold water all morning. Well, I learned that my rain boots had holes in them. Unfreakin’ believable. I don’t even notice the wetness until I am calmed down on the train.

12.45– Price emails me saying that the water is generally gone because of what the plumber did and the 2nd sump pump G got.

4:15– Price leaves late for his 4pm class.

7:30– Price just beats me home since I stayed late to make up some hours from coming in late. He goes over the situation room by room. Our bed is flipped up so the box spring can dry, the office closet has been emptied out into the office, our tub is filthy from water the sump pump has been dumping in there.

8.30ish maybe, kinda a blur- Drinking wine. ServPro FINALLY comes. I get they are busy dealing with the other water damage in the area but thanks for being like 8 hours late. Plus, G had to commit to paying an extra $325 BS emergency fee. Total Servpro- $1525 . S is calling G to get to the house since he doubted they would actually show so he is at Home Depot buying 4 dehumidifiers. ServPro sets up 8 annoying loud fans, 2 huge dehumidifiers. No, wait, 1 keep tripping the fuse so now G sets up 2 of his to take the place of the 1 big dehumidifiers.  I’m busying my self on the phone outside and checking things inside- like the 1 non-plastic box I have of photos and scrapbooks I made during highschool- damp feeling but not ruined.

10:45– I shower. Quickly. I yank as much house out of the shower as possible, rinse out the dirt, and quickly shower.

11.45– After watching (can’t actually hear) the news I crash on The Cos’ (the sofa has a name, Emily named it).

4.45– I wake up. I tip toe around the apartment, load the washer with wet dirty towels, feeding the rabbits, find clothes to wear.

6.00-I move sofa cushions and make Price move over so I can lay next to him. I break down and cry into his shirt for a min. We finally get up at 6.20 with the alarm.

7.00– on my way to work. I get an iced DD coffee and spill some of it on the floor and my leg as I sit down on the train. FML

Now- drinking more wine. Trying to tune out the loud fans. The lights are flickering because 8 huge fans, and 3 dehumidifers are taxing the system. In all about 850 sq feet of our apartment was visibly wet. The floors are buckling/cupping and the doors are expanding so it’s hard to open/close them. The rabbits are out of the apartment because I did not want the fans kicking up dust making them sick and driving them BS crazy.

I can’t wait for Thursday night since I’m driving back to CT to stay over for the night before going on to Philly to spend the weekend with my friend Dawn. My mom is going to watch the rabbits so they are out of this insanity.

*Sure we live in a basement, but it is the most tricked out apartment ever. The place was renovated within the past 8 years- solid oak hardwood floors, amazing paint job, jacuzzi, dishwasher, disposal, washer/dryer, in total about 1200 sq feet. Plus there are legit full windows in the rooms and smaller ones through out so it is not a complete cave.

The Blizzard That Wasn’t

February 11, 2010

Lots of snow. A blizzard of snow. School closed all around Boston (about 18 hours ahead of time). Plows were at the ready. People stayed home from work. Drivers took public transportation so they would not get stuck later in the horrible conditions.

the only problem…

NO SNOW

Boston ended up with about an inch of snow. Seriously.

The Cape got more but the point for me is where I live… no snow!!!!!

I think I need to change proffessions. If we make a mistake there are seriously things to account for and fix. But a weather(wo)man can be off about a 1′ of snow and no sweat, things changed. Their warns can close the publis school system ( I wish I had that power) and if they are wrong they just say “Oh the snow storm got to big it started to get warm. So, no snow.”

Pictures of the “Snow” when I left my office late last night.

But I don’t want to!!!

January 24, 2010

I don’t want to go to work tomorrow. I love having fantastic weekends but hate that they come to an end.

On Friday Price surprised me with cake. I have revolted from boxed cake mix- except for funfetti. I love funfetti!!! So when I saw he posted a picture of the cake on facebook during the day on friday I was thrilled because he made me a cake. It was so unexpected and so nice.

Plus my friend Natalie and I went to a Yelp Elite Event!  Great event with great food, booze, and some cornhole. I love yelp!

On Saturday we had plans to go to the Museum of Science to see the Harry Potter Exhibit early on in the day to beat the crowds, instead we slept in until 10.30. Although we had a late start and had to deal with crazy crowds we had a good time. I even got into a little bit of a friendly debate about NASCAR at the bar where we had lunch. Which lead Price to say “Never a dull moment” as he pulled me away from the guys outside. But guess what- I totally won beat 4 guys in that one 🙂

I was disappointed that the people at the MOS working the Harry Potter Exhibit were such Nazi’s about taking photos. There really should have been a few opportunities to take some good HP stuff. You cound not even take a picture of the poster outside the exhibit!  Crazy! At least they had a chess piece from HP and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Price and I are now MOs members so we are looking forward to going back to see other exhibits. Plus there is a network of 300 museums and zoos that have a reciprocal program so we can get in there- including the Bruce Museum (Greenwich CT) and the museum of Science and Technology (Syracuse, NY).

And then I scrapbooked, watched football, and we made a turkey today. Which is an amazing feat since we cooked it in that tiny thing over Price’s shoulder. It was good but I made crappy gravy. Oh well, at least the turkey was a success.

So i’ll have to brave the rain and the 50 mph wind gusts that we predicted for tomorrow. happy monday.

Wishing for the summer

January 14, 2010

One of the biggest problems about scrapbooking, at least for me, is that by the time I get around to doing some layouts it’s another season and it makes me miss the crunchy autumn leaves, snows flakes falling, blooming flowers, or intense sun shining down brightening your day. I appreciate all the seasons for different reasons but my favorite is summer. I love flip-flop tans, lighter hair, BBQ’s, picking tomatoes and eating from them from our little garden, sitting in our adirondack chairs at night after dinner, etc. Sure it has its pit falls like gross T rides and burning hot steering wheels but my pros out way the cons a million times over.

So finishing a scrapbook page in January of a day in July is brutal. I want the sand between my toes, I’m tired of snow boots. I want iced coffee, no hot coffee or lattes for me. Counting down until Memorial Day weekend for summer to ‘begin’.

All Supplies are from Stampin’ Up! and title is cut from a Cricut cartridge.

Tone deaf boozie folks + singing= best Friday night idea

January 13, 2010

Last Friday night Price and I went to Jacob Wirth for their Friday night sing along. There is the guy, Mel Stiller, who plays the piano so you can sing along. This guy is some song savant. Sure he has been doing this since 1989 but I am soo impress that you can request like 500 songs for him to play. It  was our first time to we were a bit new to the yelling out song pages the overall protocal but we got the hang of it and had a blast. At first we were with some Meetup people and then Emily and her friend Kevin came. So a dinner and some singing turned into a 4 and 1/2 hour experience with horse voices at the end of the night.

Price is my ying to my yang. I am loud and a bit wacky but he is collected and quite, until he has a few beers. In fact I kinda skimmed over the fact that this meetup for a sing along. He was stunned when he found out about 2 hours before getting there. Luckily, he was a good sport and went along with the whole thing- just like the time we went to see Tony and Tina’s Wedding in NYC and he ended up getting pulled into the ‘show’ and going the can can.

I was so excited that I got 2 songs played that I requested. First Ring of Fire (#360) and Don’t Stop Believin’ (#369). How can you not love Johnny Cash and Journey?!?!?! For a while Mel was saying it was too early for Don’t Stop Believin’ until a few others yelled back how it was good then. But I think the $5 tip I put in the jar right in front of him helped too.

And here we have Kevin purposely butchering “you’ve lost that lovin’ feeling”:

Moosh and Moosha

November 25, 2009

So I have a thing with nicknames.

I go by Nicole or Nic, and it has to be spelled that way. I won’t respond if people call me Nicki. There once was a time that someone introduced me to a group of people as Nicki and it made my heart stop since I now had a bunch of people calling me Nicki and with every time I heard it I would shudder. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t care if anyone else goes by Nicki. It’s just not me, it does not fit me.

Anyway, Price and I have a bunch of nicknames for each other.  Things range from Goose, Squishy* or Squish, to Moosh(a).

*So I have never seen Finding Nemo in its entirety but I think this clip is funny and that is why Squish is a nickname I call Price.

“I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy. Come on, Squishy Come on, little Squishy.”

Oooo a new toy!

October 15, 2009

So I previously posted about getting a Fuji Instant Camera. I ordered my Instax200 awhile ago but it came with no film. I was not expecting much film, I clearly understood I would need to buy more, but since digital cameras come with 32mb memory cards I was really really disappointed that I could not try it out right away. I called all around Boston, Watertown, Somerville, Cambridge, etc and no one carried film for it! Damn 🙁 Well I finally got around to ordering film and it arrived in time to take it to a Yelp Elite Event last night. It was really easy to use and produces great pictures plus I loved getting to show it off. It’s a monster of a camera so you can’t really hide it from people so if you get one have fun but be ready for some looks.

Plus here is a picture of Jack… love the ears!

The Fuji Instax 200 is big… this is it compared to my beat up high heels. They are a size 7.5. You could get the smaller Instax… but your photo is A LOT smaller, clearly.

Good Eats

October 13, 2009

IMG_0461A

I got to meet and got a book signed by Alton Brown tonight! Yes, the Alton Brown on Good Eats and Iron Chef America and the Next Iron Chef. He’s a busy man. But not too busy to sign a book. Okay, it was for a book tour to promote his new book, Good Eats: The Early Years,  but it was still so great to get him to sign the book and take a picture with me.

I met my friend Natalie to go to the signing. We waited in line for about an hour at Brookline Booksmith. We were excited!!

IMG_0457 IMG_0458

As we got closer we got more excited, plus we could see him!

IMG_0459 IMG_0460

And then it was our turns! I got the book signed for Price and me so Alton asked who Price was. I told him my boyfriend. Noticing that there was no boy with me he asked where he was and I told him in class. ‘Class for what?’ ‘ Architecture’ ‘ Cool, but there are already so many buildings. You made the right choice coming here tonight.’ Oh, Alton I agree 🙂
